Softclipping doesn't use full bandwidth, is there a reason?

Hi,

using soft clipping (which sounds very nice to my ears) I noticed that it actually leaves some little headroom. Does this happen for any purpose ?

My guess would be to keep your signal from ever going over 0dBFS no matter how hard you drive it.
