Song Protection

I don’t get your point. Almost any software is available for download somewhere. And even if not from the distributor, where is the difference between downloading it from the distributor/developer and applying a ripped serial/registration or downloading it from a torrent and do the absolutely same thing? There IS no difference.

You wonder, why it’s not shared that often? You think, because it’s affordable? I already said, people even share stuff that costs less than $10. Renoise simply isn’t shared that often, because there are not enough dumbasses willing to spread their own name all over the net, related to copyright violation. For each new version a new dumbass would have to be nuts enough. That’s actually not hard to understand. 1+1=2

What’s got this all to do with trust? Absolutely nothing. I don’t get at all, what you’re trying to say with your whole posting, which - to be honest - sounds just pretty weird to me. Sorry.

You’re the one who said Renoise had never been cracked. I’m pointing out that there is no need to do so to share it as it doesn’t use any form of protection that stops you from doing so. Yet you seem to expect them to offer you deep levels of protection they don’t even provide for themselves!

Right. And vV confirmed it. So?

Realize, Renoise has one of the hardest to crack protections out there. And trying to tell, it has not, is NONSENSE. For what reason do you think, is it that protected? Because it doesn’t make sense? What kind of stupid discussion are you trying to have with me here?

What you are trying to tell is, a very obviously branded horse is not protected against thieves, because everyone can ride it.

Yeah, that must be the reason, why I suggested to bind content protection to the personal license.

End of discussion. That was the most stupid talk I’ve had for a very long time. Seriously.

No it doesn’t!! And if you can’t see that you really are retarded! Renoise can be attained and shared with multiple people easier than most other commercial software as no cracking is required to do so. The attaining the initial software to share (which requires cracking if there is protection) is the same in each. Usually in the form of a disk image being distributed. Were do you think this disk image comes from? A registered copy! With Renoise this can just be installed again and again and again and again! With something that requires online registering or iLock it can not!

Sure it may cost a few pennies per version as the account will be lost but that’s the same for other softwares too, many of which don’t even offer free updates in the first place!

Hey Guys, not too rough on eachother please or i’ll have to close the thread…

In 1993, 2 major things happened, (a) the release of Doom, and ( b ) the release of Fast Tracker 2.

Doom as been distributed first as a shareware, where you could only play the first episode, and if you wanted to play the 3 other episodes : you had to pay.
Fast Tracker 2 had no limitations. (You could read the names of donators/contributors in the help screen of both programs).

Let’s compare these two success stories.

(1) In six years, iD has aligned the release of Doom II Hell on earth, Master levels for Doom, Final Doom, then Quake, Quake II, Quake III Arena. They’ve sold their iD tech engine to other companies that released Hexen, Heretic, Strife, all distributed as sharewares. Some games, developped on the technical basis introduced by iD software, like Unreal & Deus ex, successfully used the .XM file format. Most of these companies are still alive.

(2) Six years later, the XM file format becomes as popular as the .MID file format. FT2 has been distributed on CDs, DVDs, each computer-music relative magazine. It’s been downloaded, tested and used by millions of enthusiastic people. Check the ModArchive site to get an idea of the impressive creativity it’s been able to drive. However, the number of FT2 contributors was ridiculous and the main coder had no money in return for his efforts. Result : FT2 has been discontinued. Vogue (the coder) said : “If this was an ideal world, where there was infinite time and no need to make a living, there would definitely be a multiplatform Fasttracker3. Unfortunately this world is nothing like that.”.

The ideal world, is not a world where you have to choose between giving and receiving. The ideal world, is a world where you give 1/4 and you receive 3/4.

Would be awesome to use xrns as the standard audio platform in modern games, ando be able to replace them with your own music. :P

a little note here: Puremagnetik explicitly states in the EXS Universal file format info that it can be opened with Renoise (using a tool, as you already pointed out, which is not mentioned). Probably this has also influenced their decision of dropping the support, as the effort would have been even less useful

Heh, no need. :) Sometimes intentions are just too obvious…

Renoise has the type of user base that doesn’t want to be limited in any way when buying something, I honestly think this would only discourage people from purchasing your products. It would also be a lot of wasted time for the devs, as soon as you put DRM on something it’s just begging somebody to come along and crack it…so it usually just ends up punishing the legit users.
