The Interview.

  • What is your Renoise-name?

Rez on the forum, changed to zproc3 on irc, cause I learned there, Rez was already the nickname of a famous tracker / demoscene guy. What’s a “Renoise-name”?

  • What is your real name?

I traded my real name for Rez Iwakura. Rez comes from the rock star who wants to marry a virtual persona/IA from the book Idoru by William Gibson, not my fave of him, but the one I read the most times. Iwakura is the name of Lain in Serial Experiments Lain.

  • Any past names?

“dpo” when I was coding some simple C fx / intros / games on linux around 98 and after when hanging with the (linux) (micro) demoscene at the time. “dpo” was then pronounced “deepo” by friends, and that was lame. “Blunt” (like in blunt-something trick in skateboard) in another scene at the same time. Then “Bluntkor” / “bltkr” for a short period of time around 2002/03 when being part of the french blogosphere. Then “Rez” after that. (I could add dozens of alias, as I almost pick a new nickname for every forum i register. Some exceptions like this one where I keep “Rez”.

  • How long have you been using Renoise?

Bought the licence a few months ago. Did a very simple track with it after learning the basics of the basics. I haven’t finished a tune since with Renoise nor another sequencer.

  • How long have you been making music?

Depends. Theoretically a few years, on and off, but i consider i’ve been making music actually since september 09.

  • Have you used any other music software/platforms? If so, which ones? Which one have you been most inspired to work with?

Until recently I was addicted to Ableton Live, I still find it very good for some things, and so continue to use it, but for other things, I want/need another approach. I will eventually combine the two, or maybe throw a little Reaper in there. I’ve used Energy XT before 2.0 also with Ableton, but only used it two times since 2.0. Before using Ableton Live i used for a little time Acid pro. And before all that, when i didn’t even knew what a note is, I tried FT2, IT, and maybe some others.

  • What sort of music do you end up making? Has this music changed over time?

I end up making random music. Over time i try to controll the randomness more and more.

  • What is your favorite part of Renoise? Is there any feature that is integral to ‘your sound’?

Love the 09xx.

  • What is your favorite pattern effect code? (If you don’t know what this is go and learn them now! :P)

Guess.

  • On a scale from 1 to 10 what would be your Renoise geek-factor? Provide an example.

In my dreams my renoise geek factor is 10. Actually I recently dreamed a lot about Renoise (and other trackers). Out of my dreams, i dunno, i’d say 2, but I won’t provide any example of my low level geekiness.

  • If development of Renoise continues well into the future, what would be your ‘dream’ requested feature? Be imaginative.

More modular things. I love modular thingies.

  • Any other Renoise artists that really impress you?

VSnares?
Cevin Key? (fan of Skinny puppy and all his side projects)

Dunno.

Kaneel impress me, I usually can’t look him in the eyes.

  • Who or what are your musical inspirations? Who or what do you ‘keep coming back to’?

My musical inspirations keep on changing over years, and every months, weeks, days, hours… but in the end I always forgot what I listened to and what inspired me and I return to a blank / amnesiac state.

What I keep coming back to: A lot of movie/videogame soundtracks.

  • Are there any cover-songs you want to do?

I want to redo a cover of Solitude by Black Sabbath. I’ve done one (half cover / remix / variationp, dunno how to call it).
And at my surprise, for something very quickly done… it was not too bad. I want to redo it in a better version, and maybe borrow some friends skills to help me do it.

  • How serious are you about making music? Does Renoise consume your every thought, or do you do this occasionally just to have some fun?

I’m not serious at all about making music. Or maybe I am totally. Given one mood, depending of the day, or a period, I can spend 100X more time thinking about a tune, than writing/composing/producing it. There has been some periods where the only thing i was doing all day long, apart from sleeping or eating, was making music / playing the guitar / etc, for weeks… and I can spend 3 months without making no more than one little bar. etc.

  • Do you have a website, or a place where we can hear your work? If yes, please boast about it.

In my signature probably.

  • Do you have any fans? If so, do you know why they are fans?

I hope I don’t have any.

  • Do you play any musical instruments? If so, which is your favorite?

I play the guitar, and I’m not good at it. My fave is a keyboard and/or a mouse.

  • How much musical theory knowledge do you have? Do you feel that it’s applicable to your composition?

Very little theory knowledge. I still try to use it.

  • What are your views on song arrangement or composition? Do you just compose for yourself? Do you care what other people think?

Dunno. Dunno. I don’t care much but I care enough of what some people think about my music cause obsiously I need opinions to help me progress.

  • How much is enough repetition? How much is enough repetition?

Once is okay, barely okay.
Two is clearly too much.

  • What sort of gear can we find in “your studio”? Any bits of gear you’d like to rave about?

Midi/automap controllers: Novation Remote 25SL Compact and Novation Launchpad. A EMU xboard49.
An ibanez folk guitar. A don’t remember what brand broken folk guitar. And Epiphone LP studio guitar.
A Yamaha RM1X groovebox looking cool which I almost never used.
A Yamaha AN1X (VA synth) I LOVE.
A Nintendo DS with Korg DS10 and midi/audio/Tracker/sequencers homebrews.
ESI monitors, one broken, i lost the bill for the warranty.
Soundcard MAUDIO DELTA AUDIOPHILE 24/96
Some figures cause I’m a child: Rei Ayanami, Lain Iwakura, Hatsune Miku and Frank the Rabbit.

And a computer. The only thing i really need. (with the headphones and the screen that goes with the computer)

  • Have you got any plug-ins you’d like to rave about? Are there certain plugs you keep coming back to?

My dearest is KarmaFX synth modular.
The one I keep coming back to is Synth1, probably the first softsynth I tried, and I still find it awesome.

  • Is your studio adequate? What gear are you needing to buy?

I need better headphones and to fix my monitorings. I need to bring my old Atari back here!
I don’t “need” anything else. But I want a Telecaster, a Jaguar, and an Alesis Ion. Maybe a MIDINES or LSDJ.

  • Outside of your musical skill, how good is your engineering? Do your ears or gear deceive you? Do you value getting outside ‘sonic’ help?

Dunno.
My ears are crap.
I deceive myself more than my gear does.

  • Additionally, do you master your songs yourself or do you get someone else to do them?

I tried mastering some. It ended worse. I thought that MAYBE I needed to do a proper mix before…

  • Have you ever performed live? If yes, how did you do it? What would you think would be ideal to reproduce your music live?

No, and it will never happen. Not with me alive.

  • Do you ever seek to make money with your music? Do you make money now?

Gna. Me <-- newb. Couldn’t make money with it even if I wanted to. And I think I don’t want to. Money makes me unconfortable.

  • Are you involved with any labels? Netlabels?

Two netlabels:

Vault 106: I have an old release on this one. And most of the people there are acquaintances. blablabla http://vault106.tuxfamily.org/
Mekkanikal Industries: Part of the team. The netlabel was on pause… We’re trying to revive it, there’s a call to submission for a Tribute to Silent Hill, I have my tune for it… the new website is in developement. blaaah. http://www.mekkanikal.com/

  • What is better for your future: being on a contract or being independent?

wut

  • Have you ever worked collaboratively? Do you like working collaboratively? Will you do it in the future?

Yes. Depends. Yes.

  • Do you have an ‘albatross song’? (A song that people really like that you don’t and they won’t leave you alone about it)

Nope.

  • Do you like your music? Any songs your are proud of? (come on, do tell!)

Depends.
Two.

  • What do you think is lacking in your music? Do you feel you need to be working on any one particular area?

EARS.

  • Along the same lines, what do you think holds you back from achieving what you want?

EARS.

  • What sort of ‘zone’ do you like to be in before you can make music on Renoise? Has this got something to do with environment, people, drugs, food, temperature, cosmic energy, etc?

My confort zone is when madness leaves me a day off.

  • Have you thought about why you make music? Do you have answer?

There’s only one important thing in my life, the music (I listen to - guess it fuels my need to try to make some)

  • Do you think you would still be making music if Renoise didn’t exist? What about if computers didn’t exist?

Tools are tools. But computers are vital!

  • Has accessible MIDI and digital technology changed music for the better or worse?

Both.

  • What do you think about the current direction of the music industry? What contributions are the mp3, the blog, piracy, and myspace making on the direction of popular music culture? Could you care less?

Ow, there is too much to write there. I pass.

  • Is there such thing as “bad music”? If so, please provide examples.

hmm, let me tell you I haven’t slept for more than 24 hours, I might make a division by zero if I try to think about it.

“bad art is more tragically beautiful than good art 'cause it documents human failure.”

  • Can music really change the world? Has your music ever ‘made a change’ in someone?

Can cold fission bomb make music? Maybe that could change the world.
No I don’t throw bombs at people to make them change.

  • What is music going to sound like in 2014? What’s music going to sound like in 2500?

It will sound like organised sounds/noise in 2014. By 2500 it will sound like 2014 but nobody will be able to hear it cuz humans will have mutated and won’t have ears anymore.

  • Is Trance Gay?

I may be Gay.
I used to like Trance.
But I don’t like Trance anymore.
I believe I’m more asexual than Gay.
And I also believe Trance has no genre/sex.
I didn’t understand the question btw…

  • Core or K0r3?

wut

  • Kaneel?

I TALK TO HIM ONCE, I WAS LIKE OMG!!!1!IAM TALKING TO KANEEL I CANT BELIEVE IT!!!1

  • Why?

Who?

Too many questions… and answers…

Good to see this resurrected. I’m enjoying the responses.

lol at the is trance gay answers. :P

It’s been a while, so I’m updating this:

What is your Renoise-name? What is your real name? Any past names?
I’m known around these parts as BYTE-Smasher. My real name is irrelevant, though not hard to find. My only past musical “name” is Empty Pulsations. Don’t bother looking for my music from that era because it sucked. Well, not all of it. At least one of the tracks from that era will be on my upcoming album. I’ve also got a noise project called Structure Theory.

How long have you been using Renoise?
Holy crap, has it been 4 years? :o

How long have you been making music?
I think I started tracking in 1996. I still haven’t figured out how to make music.

Have you used any other music software/platforms? If so, which ones? Which one have you been most inspired to work with?
The order goes like this: St3, FT2, Rebirth, every other tracker on the planet (they all sucked), Renoise.
I still hate FL. Sony Acid is still the most useless piece of tripe I’ve ever been forced to use. I’m still trying to learn Ableton.
Renoise (plus many VSTs) still inspires me more than any other software I’ve ever used.
Reading my old post reminded me Coagula… I’d forgotten the name of that tool :P

What sort of music do you end up making? Has this music changed over time?
Strangely, no matter how much I try to make up a “sort” of music… I always end up making shit that has a distinctively “BYTE-Smasher” sound. I’ve tried making breakcore… I’ve tried making industrial… I’ve tried making electro… and I’ve tried making big beat. The result of each attempt is always a mashup of all these genres… and I seem to have a strange habit of choosing lead synths that just sound like chip leads. So in that sense, I guess I’m a reluctant, noisy chip artist.

What is your favorite part of Renoise? Is there any feature that is integral to ‘your sound’?
My favorite part of Renoise is the porn. It’s integral to my sound.

What is your favorite pattern effect code? (If you don’t know what this is go and learn them now! :P)
Still Ex and XYzz. How boring is that, eh? :P … that said, the delay column has become my newest bed buddy.

On a scale from 1 to 10 what would be your Renoise geek-factor? Provide an example.
I think I’ve become a 9. Once I release an album, I’ll be a full out 10.

  • I’m a licensed user!
  • I run the #renoise irc channel
  • I use Renoise as my only tracker/sequencer/sampler
  • I’ve run many Renoise compos, and helped Mickrip code a one hour compo system which is now going unused
  • I created a Renoise userbar (the damned userbars site got hijacked by spammers, so I’ve disowned them now)
  • I abandoned my petition to open source FT2 once I found Renoise
  • I act as a Renoise missionary, no longer converting only wayward FT2 users, but wayward users of every other sequencer in existence
  • I’m still the only person in my City/Town that uses Renoise
  • I’m the top posting user that isn’t an admin or an alpha tester
  • I’m one of two “Composes without Wires burns Directly from Brain to DVD that is already in Store” Members on the board
  • I pronounce it “Renn-wazze”

If development of Renoise continues well into the future, what would be your ‘dream’ requested feature? Be imaginative.
Hmm… dream feature == metadevice plugin SDK that works in many languages including .Net langs. You don’t want to know what I’d do for this feature. Really. It’s scary how far I’d go.

… Seems I might just get this ability in the next round… well, minus the multilanguage/.Net.

Any other Renoise artists that really impress you?
All the ones I named last time and more. You all impress me. Except you of course. You know who you are. I’m lookin at you.

Who or what are your musical inspirations? Who or what do you ‘keep coming back to’?
Apparently, according to all my complete songs, my primary musical inspiration is the NES. Go figure. I though it was NIN.

Are there any cover-songs you want to do?
Plenty, but I can’t say right now, because they’re such good ideas that other people will undoubtedly snatch them up and do em better than I ever could. I also need a good mic first.

How serious are you about making music? Does Renoise consume your every thought, or do you do this occasionally just to have some fun?
I’m getting more and more serious the more music I make. I wish I could produce sound for a well paying living. Well, I might become a dominatrix on the side… but only for furries and kaneels.

Do you have a website, or a place where we can hear your work? If yes, please boast about it.
See my sig plz.

Do you have any fans? If so, do you know why they are fans?
I’ve got one hanging precariously above my dinner table, and a new one on my dresser. We got rid of the one in the closet, because closet-case fans are silly. I’m not sure they know why they’re fans, actually.

Do you play any musical instruments? If so, which is your favorite?
Piano, Keyboard, Guitar, Drums. I love percussion, but keyboard based instruments are fun to play. I also love the sound of distorted guitar, though I can’t play it very well. Oh, I’m also a vocalist. That’s actually my favorite I think. Vocals are fking great. Oh fk it, I can’t decide. They’re all good instruments. Otherwise, why would I play them?
Did I mention I need a good mic?

How much musical theory knowledge do you have? Do you feel that it’s applicable to your composition?
If I had to use a staff to write music I’d scream. I can read sheet, but at about 3 notes a minute. I know what a scale is, but don’t ask me to recite or play any of them. I know most basic chord structures. My composition is based on feeling, instinct, and very basic musical knowledge. Also: Syncopation.

Now production knowledge… that’s a whole other ball of wax. I’m fairly sure I could teach it.

What are your views on song arrangement or composition? Do you just compose for yourself? Do you care what other people think?
Well, song arrangement is a tough one. It’s quite possibly my weakest area of expertise… but I attempt to mix it up and laugh in the face of convention. Ah, who am I kidding… I’m a pop artist… a pop artist that has a fetish for changing time signatures in the middle of a bar.

These days, I compose entirely for me. I’m at the point right now where I’m anxious to hear what I end up cranking out. Too bad I’ve got to rely on myself not to fuck up any given track I’m working on, eh? I think I should probably find someone local to collaborate with, tbh.

How much is enough repetition? How much is enough repetition?
Repetition with variation is fine. Repetition to emphasize a point is also fine. Repetition to deliberately invoke a sense of ennui or melancholy is alright too. Redundancy for the sake of laziness is unacceptable. Remixes that sound the same as the original are right out. (Couldn’t have said it better myself)

What sort of gear can we find in “your studio”? Any bits of gear you’d like to rave about?
What the fk is a studio? Who the hell needs gear? Who put that platypus over there? How come I keep having dreams about TakTik being trapped in a clear plastic room filled with huge white pill shaped candies? Why the fk does Silent Bob talk in most of his movies? What the f**k is she looking at? points at god

Have you got any plug-ins you’d like to rave about? Are there certain plugs you keep coming back to?
Dblue Glitch. Izotope Ozone. NI Massive. Peach & Toad. Guitar Rig II. Crazy Ivan. Rescue. VOXENGO FREAKING GLISSEQ.

Is your studio adequate? What gear are you needing to buy?
See question before the previous question. No, really, I need a shitload of equipment. It’s not funny, really. All I’ve got is a laptop and $20 JVC marshmallows. I’ll accept donations… feel free to send any old equipment my way. No, I won’t pay for shipping.

Ok I lied… I’ve also got a Korg Poly61M which naturally lacks filter knobs, and a Fender Stratocaster that needs to be noise shielded.

Outside of your musical skill, how good is your engineering? Do your ears or gear deceive you? Do you value getting outside ‘sonic’ help?
Godly, I’ve been told… considering I do it all on earbud headphones. Again, donations are welcome in the form of powered tannoy monitors.

Additionally, do you master your songs yourself or do you get someone else to do them?
It’s all me, baby. Me and Mr. Ozone, that is. I guess that makes two :(

Have you ever performed live? If yes, how did you do it? What would you think would be ideal to reproduce your music live?
Karaoke aside, I have performed with my father on stage (Never do this. No matter how much he begs.) and I have performed a play for my Drama class in high school. I recently played a couple of my tracks at a party, and nobody seemed to notice. I was devastated.

Do you ever seek to make money with your music? Do you make money now?
Any money I make on my music is going back into my music… whether this means buying gear or plugins. Keep this in mind when my album comes out. In total, I’ve made $4 revenue in over 13 years of production. Interestingly, I’ve broken even. Considering I’m a licensed user, your brain should now be exploding.

Are you involved with any labels? Netlabels?
I released a nice funk track on a Ronin compilation

What is better for your future: being on a contract or being independent?
I’m staying indie, with the intent of starting a cooperative marketing service for likeminded artists if I actually get off the ground with my own music.

Have you ever worked collaboratively? Do you like working collaboratively? Will you do it in the future?
I’ll collab. Don’t expect to ever finish the track though. Send me your shittiest tracks if you want some good times.

Do you have an ‘albatross song’? (A song that people really like that you don’t and they won’t leave you alone about it)
Nope. I wish.

Do you like your music? Any songs your are proud of? (come on, do tell!)
I’m at the point now where I can’t stop listening to certain tracks. I really should stop listening to them and get back to working on the other ones though :P

What do you think is lacking in your music? Do you feel you need to be working on any one particular area?
What’s lacking in my music is a complete album that I can release… so if I have to work on anything, it’s accomplishing that goal.

Along the same lines, what do you think holds you back from achieving what you want?
I’m not as obsessive as I should be.

What sort of ‘zone’ do you like to be in before you can make music on Renoise? Has this got something to do with environment, people, drugs, food, temperature, cosmic energy, etc?
I need time, a power jack, and an area where I can focus on my music with headphones on. I also need a lack of distractions… or perhaps I need more distractions. I find I do my best work spontaneously… often throwing tracks together really fast, then spending ages fleshing them out afterwards.

Have you thought about why you make music? Do you have answer?
I have an existential urge to release my creative energies in a constructive manner.

Do you think you would still be making music if Renoise didn’t exist? What about if computers didn’t exist?
I’d be making music without Renoise, but it wouldn’t sound nearly as close to what I want it to sound like. If computers didn’t exist, however, I’d probably be inventing them instead of making music.

Has accessible MIDI and digital technology changed music for the better or worse?
Better. The infinite realm of digitally enhanced and/or digitally composed music has just started to unravel. We will soon hear sounds of which we could only imagine.

What do you think about the current direction of the music industry? What contributions are the mp3, the blog, piracy, and myspace making on the direction of popular music culture? Could you care less?
I didn’t answer this one last time. I’d have to say the current state of the industry is better than it ever has been. New artists are finally getting a chance to make it without the backing of a huge label. Granted, piracy is a problem, but it’s moreso a symptom of the failings of the traditional business model. Fix the business model, and piracy will again become the minor threat it once was. Start by making recorded music cheap to purchase.

Is there such thing as “bad music”? If so, please provide examples.
Almost all the bands in Last.FM’s 2009 top 100 artists list. Notable exceptions (among a few others): Lady Gaga, The Prodigy, Rammstein, and Depeche Mode.

Can music really change the world? Has your music ever ‘made a change’ in someone?
Yes. Yes.

What is music going to sound like in 2014? What’s music going to sound like in 2500?
What does the color purple taste like? How did George Bush ever get into power? These questions and more, tonight on “Unsolvable Mysteries”

Is Trance Gay?
No. Trance is stupid. To call it gay insults gays everywhere.

Core or K0r3?
Kore. No 0. No 3. Just Kore.

Kaneel?
Hell yes.

Why? Why not?

First of all sorry for the poor english coming.

- What is your Renoise-name? What is your real name? Any past names?
*Arboreal / aRBREAL ; jeddy3 before renoise… Marc V is my real name.

- How long have you been using Renoise?
*1 year approximately

- How long have you been making music?
*Since my childhood (I was a very bad pianist younger), but I always wanted to make my own songs.

- Have you used any other music software/platforms? If so, which ones? Which one have you been most inspired to work with?
*I have tried a lot (mainly Cubase + Cool Edit H20…yeah I know) but Renoise is my first serious software. Since 3 years, I’m mainly under Linux because of puredata and JACK.

- What sort of music do you end up making? Has this music changed over time?
*Dunno, maybe a maelstrom of electro, hip-hop, indie-rock with vocals harmonies and melody. At the beginning I mainly composed slow depressive songs with a lot of reverb on my voice.
Now I’m learning to make correct beats, and I’m trying to understand the secret of a good mix. But I’m not very good at it. But it’s a lot better than 2 years ago. After that, I must learn to sing in English…

- What is your favorite part of Renoise? Is there any feature that is integral to ‘your sound’?
*All, I like the tracker view, the slow cpu, the fastness. I mostly use the delay FX.

- What is your favorite pattern effect code? (If you don’t know what this is go and learn them now! )
*09xx

- On a scale from 1 to 10 what would be your Renoise geek-factor? Provide an example.
*Maybe 6 but in 1 year it will be 10. I’ve downloaded the Live Demo, and I’m not able to compose in horizontal now…

- If development of Renoise continues well into the future, what would be your ‘dream’ requested feature?
*A simple way to launch individual pattern in live. (Midi/OSC Mapping + I dont know how Renoise will do it…)

- Any other Renoise artists that really impress you?
*Hunz, Kaneel, Keith303, JBL, p7, Keith303, Vivace, IT-Alien, jonas, VS of course…
Not because they play my kind of music, but because they sound clear and pro.

- Who or what are your musical inspirations? Who or what do you ‘keep coming back to’?
*I like music with organized melodic and rythm chaos. I like vocals harmonies . I like when I’m surprised. A mix of Clouddead, VS, Modest Mouse, Plaid and Emperor…

- Are there any cover-songs you want to do?
*I’ve already covered Granddady - Jed Other’s Poem, but I need to redo it with Renoise. Maybe Digging Holes in Water from Modest Mouse is the next one.

- How serious are you about making music? Does Renoise consume your every thought, or do you do this occasionally just to have some fun?
*It consumes all my freetime. Music is the only thing I’m enjoying as work and hobby. And now it’s mainly with Renoise

- Do you have a website, or a place where we can hear your work? If yes, please boast about it.
*Not really, just a blog where I share for myself some tips. It’s in french and I’m the only visitor. There is only one post too.

- Do you have any fans? If so, do you know why they are fans?
*My sister. And some nice friends, to polite to be honest.

- Do you play any musical instruments? If so, which is your favorite?
*Piano. I compose with a midi keyboard. I like the sound of the Cello.

- How much musical theory knowledge do you have? Do you feel that it’s applicable to your composition?
*I know a lot of things about music, theory but in a shallow manner. I’m pretty lazy, when it becomes too hard to understand, I jump into another subject. The curse of my life…

- What are your views on song arrangement or composition? Do you just compose for yourself? Do you care what other people think?
*Suva said to me one day, for the MBC compo that my song was bad. I was very disappointed. But he was right.
I think I’m enough good in compo, creativity, sometimes melody, but I’m lacking skills in mastering and beats.

- How much is enough repetition? How much is enough repetition?
*3 times. Yes I know, sometimes I feel ashamed when I use the same loop/pattern again, again and again.

- What sort of gear can we find in “your studio”? Any bits of gear you’d like to rave about?
*arduinome, padkontrol, axiom61, and a computer with a soundblaster Live.

- Have you got any plug-ins you’d like to rave about? Are there certain plugs you keep coming back to?
*Not really, maybe Glich from dblue, but I avoid to use it.

- Is your studio adequate? What gear are you needing to buy?
*A good mic. A real Piano.

- Outside of your musical skill, how good is your engineering? Do your ears or gear deceive you? Do you value getting outside ‘sonic’ help?
*I learn pretty fast a lot of things, but when the slope becomes too hard, I screw up. I never finish my different projects… My ears are standard.

- Additionally, do you master your songs yourself or do you get someone else to do them?
*Yes, but I will ask you to help me, when I will be able to gather some money and songs…

Have you ever performed live? If yes, how did you do it? What would you think would be ideal to reproduce your music live?
*No. But yes, I want to be able to perform live, meaning trigger some loops, play piano, and sing “Aaaaah, ououououh” and stupid lyrics sometimes.

- Do you ever seek to make money with your music? Do you make money now?
*No, I will be happy if this day is coming, not because of the money, but because some people think my music is enough good to be paid.

- Are you involved with any labels? Netlabels?
*I’m not ready, my songs don’t sound enough good I guess.

- What is better for your future: being on a contract or being independent?
Don’t know yet, maybe independant, but I work better with constraint.

- Have you ever worked collaboratively? Do you like working collaboratively? Will you do it in the future?
*One time with conner…for the indammix contest. I would like to collaborate, but I’m afraid to be not enough good for the other guy.

- Do you have an ‘albatross song’? (A song that people really like that you don’t and they won’t leave you alone about it)
*Yes but it’s more some French bands than a song, like “le Peuple de L’herbe” or “Les ogres de Barback”. I can’t stand this kind of music whereas a lot of too cool french people (and girls at my great desperation) enjoy it…

- Do you like your music? Any songs your are proud of? (come on, do tell!)
*Yes I think some of my songs are maybe good (it depends of the day), but there’s always a thing that worry me, and it’s mainly because of the mastering. Also my french accent and my breathy microphone when I sing…
I like my compo for the Immortal Empire contest in a melodic point of view. But the mix is awful.

- What do you think is lacking in your music? Do you feel you need to be working on any one particular area?
*Mastering (the bass above all), good beats (original), learn to play in certain scale/mode.

- Along the same lines, what do you think holds you back from achieving what you want?
*Too messy. I’m like a kid. Unpatient, too lazy sometimes. I want to succeed without effort…

- What sort of ‘zone’ do you like to be in before you can make music on Renoise? Has this got something to do with environment, people, drugs, food, temperature, cosmic energy, etc?
*In my room alone, with cigarettes, coffee and a rainy day outside.

- Have you thought about why you make music? Do you have answer?
*Because it’s in my head, I need to make the ultimate song that gather all I like and that nobody has done. I need to be creative.

- Do you think you would still be making music if Renoise didn’t exist? What about if computers didn’t exist?
*Hmm good question, maybe I will learn to play Piano correctly.

- Has accessible MIDI and digital technology changed music for the better or worse?
*For the better of course. I can play all the instruments!

- What do you think about the current direction of the music industry? What contributions are the mp3, the blog, piracy, and myspace making on the direction of popular music culture? Could you care less?
*I don’t know, I think it’s a weird period for music. I sometimes think it’s bad.
Debussy said at the beginning of the 20th Century that there’s too much musician and too much that sucks. Now in 2010, I let you imagine.
But actually, it’s good thing for discovering a lot of artists that I could potentially appreciate. And of course I can share my music even if Debussy said I’m bad.

- Is there such thing as “bad music”? If so, please provide examples.
*Sometimes mine when I try to be Aaron Funk or Richard The Tuss AFX…

- Can music really change the world? Has your music ever ‘made a change’ in someone?
*No, maybe it can change a single person (during the length of the song) but surely not the world.

- What is music going to sound like in 2014? What’s music going to sound like in 2500?
*Breakhoprockore music. But 2012 is the end of the world. I’m sorry but there will not have a year 2014 or 2500.

- Is Trance Gay?
*Yes of course.

- Core or K0r3?
Core, i’m not leet.

- Kaneel?
Cannelle.

- Why?
An excellent band!

- What is your Renoise-name? What is your real name? Any past names?- How long have you been using Renoise?
Moss - real name Knicker-less Rodgers
- How long have you been making music?
Been writing properly for about 3/4 years.
- Have you used any other music software/platforms? If so, which ones?
Cubase, then Reason ;) then Renoise…
- Which one have you been most inspired to work with?
renoise of course, although i feel i’ve lost my patience, from having so much freedom!
- What sort of music do you end up making? Has this music changed over time?
I tend to make melodic, expressive, personal music. Not necessarily, it’s just got more TECH!
- What is your favorite part of Renoise?
It’s all pretty damned wicked
- What is your favorite pattern effect code?
volume column for expression with melody. 0DXX for beats.
- On a scale from 1 to 10 what would be your Renoise geek-factor? Provide an example.
9F - I’m super fast, but still don’t know everything.
- If development of Renoise continues well into the future, what would be your ‘dream’ requested feature? Be imaginative.
Vertical sample blocks, so i can use it to record things…PROPERLY.
- Any other Renoise artists that really impress you?
The larynx competition entries are all pretty wicked…
- Who or what are your musical inspirations? Who or what do you ‘keep coming back to’?
Jeff Buckley
Frank Zappa
Talking Heads
- Are there any cover-songs you want to do?
Jeff Buckley - Eternal Life
Frank Zappa - Zut Allores
Talking Heads - Born Under Punches
- How serious are you about making music?
Absolutely obsessed. Everything i do in life is either related, or helping toward it.
- Do you have a website, or a place where we can hear your work? If yes, please boast about it.

- Do you have any fans? If so, do you know why they are fans?
I have no fans outside of my friendship group. Even then, are they really fans? I have not strived to put my music “out there”. I spose i should.
- Do you play any musical instruments? If so, which is your favorite?
I play the drums/percussion, guitar, and piano.
I have days where i’m better at one than the other…i most enjoy the days when i’m best on the drums though. :)
- How much musical theory knowledge do you have? Do you feel that it’s applicable to your composition?
Since i compose in renoise only, i dont use theory very much when writing. When one is using samples that may or may not have C as their root note (and i havent bothered to make it so) there’s no point concentrating on which notes your using. It’s different also seeing it in text form when i’m used to scored music.
When trying to explain the music, the theory comes in handy, but the actual writing is all from the instinct.
- What are your views on song arrangement or composition? Do you just compose for yourself? Do you care what other people think?
Cheesy, but no. It’s always a bit disappointing when someone doesnt dig something you do, but writing music is my thing for me.
I don’t think i could write a classic dubstep/garage/dance tune anyway. It wouldn’t come out.
- How much is enough repetition? How much is enough repetition?
Depends, that’s a tricky question.
I think it’s down to working with constraints.
When working with a small amount of equipment, and it’s live, repetition is appreciated.
If you write 2/4 patterns on renoise, and loop them over and over for a song? That’s just lazy.
I’m a big fan of Steve Reich, he writes the most repetitive music ever…or is it?
I dunno,
Repetition is OK, if done by a human.
- What sort of gear can we find in “your studio”? Any bits of gear you’d like to rave about?
MC202 - TR606 - TR505 - a mixer
- Have you got any plug-ins you’d like to rave about? Are there certain plugs you keep coming back to?
No
- Is your studio adequate? What gear are you needing to buy?
Not really, i’d like to buy MASSIVE one day… I need to buy Drum mics too.
- Outside of your musical skill, how good is your engineering? Do your ears or gear deceive you? Do you value getting outside ‘sonic’ help?
Tricky, i would say i don’t have ultimate control over the frequencies. But, i know what i like, and i know how to get to it.
- Additionally, do you master your songs yourself or do you get someone else to do them?
YES - myself
- Have you ever performed live? If yes, how did you do it? What would you think would be ideal to reproduce your music live?
Yes, a couple of times. Me and a friend performed our tracks, with variations using two instances of renoise. No syncing, we had to play at the same time, then sync up the click…etc .It was alright. I find live performance quite daunting. I dont have the most extensive musical knowledge of electronic music.
- Do you ever seek to make money with your music? Do you make money now?
It would be good. For sure. I will keep writing otherwise.
- Are you involved with any labels? Netlabels?
There was some talk, but it turned out to be a CROCK OF SHITE.
- What is better for your future: being on a contract or being independent?
I’d like to have a crack at the contract.
- Have you ever worked collaboratively? Do you like working collaboratively? Will you do it in the future?
I have, not for a while though. I enjoy it, it helps relieve the pressure. It can grate too though, when you dont agree on an idea.
- Do you like your music? Any songs your are proud of? (come on, do tell!)
Yes, at times, other times i listen to it, and certain parts REALLY annoy me…the mess. I dream of going back and sorting them all out…but meh, they’re gone.
My favourite tune is probably I M Butterz though. A moment of absolute madness, this was the tune that kicked me full time into R’NOYZ.
- What do you think is lacking in your music? Do you feel you need to be working on any one particular area?
PATIENCE
- Along the same lines, what do you think holds you back from achieving what you want?
the lack of
- What sort of ‘zone’ do you like to be in before you can make music on Renoise? Has this got something to do with environment, people, drugs, food, temperature, cosmic energy, etc?
Weed, or just kick started by an idea.
- Have you thought about why you make music? Do you have answer?
There is nothing better than sitting back and listening to your tune through once it’s finished…and enjoying it.
The months after finishing a song are pure relax. Then the bug starts to nibble at you again.
I truly feel sorry for people that dont compose, they’ll never get that.
- Do you think you would still be making music if Renoise didn’t exist? What about if computers didn’t exist?
You know?
I don’t think i’d be writing computer music as much. I may still be on reason… :D
- Has accessible MIDI and digital technology changed music for the better or worse?
Better for the good guys. But better for the bad guys too.
- What do you think about the current direction of the music industry? What contributions are the mp3, the blog, piracy, and myspace making on the direction of popular music culture? Could you care less?
It’s changing, that’s all, it’s always changing. Another period on it’s way, and another one after that…
As for blogs, myspace etc i think it’s brilliant. Only problem is, there are some ridiculous blogs, and equally ridiculous myspace…
Like i said; Good for the good guys, but good for the bad guys too.
- Can music really change the world??
It already is, all the time. But if your question means, one song/album that the whole world listens to and thinks…hey guys, we need to stop fighting…then no.
- What is music going to sound like in 2014? What’s music going to sound like in 2500?
I hope we manage to drag ourselves out of this autotuned R&B not-hop bullcrap soon…somehow though, i dont think so.
2500, music will be banned by then. ;)
- Is Trance Gay?
Yer
- Core or K0r3?
cor ! :dribble:
- Kaneel?
No thankyou,
- Why?
i’d rather stand up.
