So, If I’m trying to get a super staccato bass line going I’m finding I can only do it on the volume column using C8 or C6 (well 1 through to 9) and have had no joy on the FX column using the oCxy command ?
can someone post an example of something that uses the command in action ? I learn mostly by seeing someone else do something 1st !
The Cx command cuts the note to silence after x ticks.
The Cxy command cuts the note to x volume factor after y ticks. The volume factor x can be anything from 0 (silence) to F (full volume). A value of 4 is ~25% volume, 8 is ~50% volume, C is ~75% volume, and so on.
The tick range of the command is determined by your song’s Ticks Per Line setting, which is set to 12 TPL by default.
Assuming you have the default 12 TPL setting:
C1 or C01 would cut the note to silence after a single tick, almost instantly.
C3 or C03 would cut the note to silence after 1/4 of a pattern line (3 out of 12 ticks).
C6 or C06 would cut the note to silence after 1/2 of a pattern line (6 out of 12 ticks).
C48 would cut the note to 25% volume after 2/3 of a pattern line (8 out of 12 ticks).
C89 would cut the note to 50% volume after 3/4 of a pattern line (9 out of 12 ticks).
CC or C0C would do nothing because C (12 decimal) is the song’s TPL limit, so you should put a C0 or C00 on the next pattern line instead
Etc.
The exact values are usually not super important. Just learn what each particular effect command digit does, then experiment to find something that sounds good to you
PS. Please note (heh) that this is primarily a sample command, not one that works very well with VST instruments. The Cx command does work to send a note off to the plugin after x ticks, but the Cxy command (which can only affect sample volume, not plugins) will have no real effect.
