It all sounds fantastic apart from that, I can’t believe you’ve done that to both of them. That was a feature, not a bug.
It would be wonderful if you could choose smooth behaviour or old behaviour, maybe even with the old behaviour exaggerated when that mode is being used.

I guess you’d want an additional parameter specifying the crossfade (smoothing) amount
