Rn 2.0 - winner?
Renoise 2 still won’t support buzz machine
But perhaps with the use of MIDI Yoke and MIDI OX and ReaRoute you can use Renoise as a buzz machine, then you don’t need to choose, but can just combine the two
The only thing I really used was FT2, and maybe protracker on the Amiga to play modules (but not to make 'em). Much else I played around with, but nothing seemed to stick…
Or you can use the Buzz Machine->VST wrapper
I’ve done that for a specific sound I used in Buzz and brought into Renoise.
I started using a really crude tracker that was bundled with the Amiga sampler - DSS and I believe the tracker went by the same name.
I then switched to Octamed for a few years and also used it with an Alesis SR16 drum machine and a roland PC-200 mk-II (I think??) midi controller. Really great setup.
When I finally switched to the dark side (the peecee via a 75 mzh Pentium when they first arrived) I bought the Yamaha DB50XG daugterboard for my Soundblaster 2. Really amazing tweakable sounds. This was also used with the roland PC200 controller. I was using a very old version of Cakewalk to compose music with the DB50XG and it was probably the period of music making I enjoyed most.
It really helped me a lot to move away from sample based music making.
I switched to Fast Tracker 2 and Renoise years ago…
In order of appearance:
C64, soundmonitor, rockmonitor 3
Amiga, soundtracker, protracker, octamed (for midi)
Pc, fasttracker 2, renoise
And since 1998, SID Duzz It for C64.
C64 i bought for gaming, but became musician+coder
Amiga i bought for music, it improved my music overnight, having an extra channel (for drums)
Pc i bought for music. If there had been no Fasttracker 2, i wouldnt have bought it.
And ofcourse Soundblaster AWE 32! fuck GUS!
Now i have SB Audigy 2, but when i upgrade to quadcore machine, i want an X-FI!
And i will only upgrade to Quadcore if it gives more cpu in Renoise.
Does it ?
It does.
can i quote you on that? ;D
fast tracker, a short intercourse with buzz, madtracker (oh boi, filterz ) rebirth got me to start using reason later … then it was reason + cubase until circle ended with renoise <3
Amiga 500: Protracker and OctaMed
PC: modEdit, Xtracker, Digitracker, Fasttracker, Modplug, Renoise
Micrologic, Screamtracker, PlayerPro, FT2, MadTracker, Renoise
well, if it will ever grow all those ultra efficient peer-control features (that we know from buzz) for RNI instruments and VST’s - i’ll forget about buzz and its machines whatsoever.
because the main issue here is not machines, but balance, usability and workflow.
I actually just upgraded my ole 1200. New CF card (4GB) adapter as harddrive, PCMCIA network card, 64MB FastRam & an 68882 co-processor for my blizzard 1230-40 turbocard. oh… and a flickerfixer + an used 17" monitor to go with it.
Anyway, my hystory:

OctaMED

FL (PC) + Protracker (Amiga)
Renoise
FL + Renoise
FL + Renoise + OctaMED Soundstudio + Protracker (now)
used Reason but it wasn’t for me…
(1990) Protracker -> Octamed Pro @ Amiga (the beginning)
(1996) nothing @ PC (creative breakdown)
(1999) Cakewalk Pro Audio -> Rebirth -> Digital Orchestrator+Yamaha DJX2 -> Fruity Loops (looking for the perfect PC sequencer)
(2002) Reason + Acid Pro (found it)
(2005) Renoise + energyXT VST (back to the roots)
(2009) ???@Mac???
I start to create music in the early 90ths. First with Cubase on an Amiga Falcon 30, later on my Win 3.1 PC.
Later i bought an 16 Bit (hurray) Soundkart from Yamaha and worked with FT2.
Several years later i switched back to Cubase VST on Win9x.
Now i searched for a good Software to continue it under linux. I really miss Cubase, but now renoise bring the old times back
