Hi,
I have little experience with Macs, and am currently building me a solid website () where I want to offer music downloads through zip files - best option for many reasons, imo.
so, is this in any way a bad idea for Mac users? i mean, are zips as common on Macs as on pc? is there a native unzipper built in yer fancy OSx?
and do clicking zip-links on Mac return a similar “save file as” dialog as on pc?
yeah zip is supported natively, double clicking a zip extracts it.
it’s super easy to make zips in leopard too, you just select some files, right click and click compress.
something like unarchiver let’s you extract more formats.
thanks very much guys!
exactly what i needed to hear.
Conner: haha, no Macs just seem to have their own ways of doing things.
If you’d said i had to have something like “Applezip” or “iZip” installed, i probably would have fallen for it. that’s how much i know about macs
Interestingly you can’t open a Stuffit archive on a Mac out of the box anymore. I guess it’s only natural since Stuffit doesn’t come included these days.
About “save as”, it depends on the browser. Firefox behaves pretty much similarly from platform to platform for example but Safari for example just saves the zip on your download folder and then makes said folder bounce on the dock to let you know something just dropped in. But I don’t think this is anything to worry about, links and downloads work across browsers they way the user is already used to so they’ll get to listen to your music eventually.
