I kinda like this but I think it’s tricky because it could only work one time… otherwise it needs to track the new inst # as well, and that could be dangerous.
Example:
I want to map inst 1 to inst 3. I select inst 1 as src instrument and press +1… well now it’s inst 2! So doing a +1 won’t do anything.
But if Renoise automatically changed the src instrument to track 2 at that point, now when I press +1 again then ALL inst 2 notes (selected by the AE mask) would get changed, which might not be what I want.
I’ve definitely thought about something like this in the past. But I think it’s tricky… unless maybe I’ve misunderstood you?

Ah no, I thought it just would make +1 or -1 to the instrument number in the current selection in pattern, regardless of those source/target fields. Just a plain simple stepper for instrument number. So in your case, simply two times press +1.
Maybe a shortcut is a better place then. LIke https://forum.renoise.com/t/new-tool-3-1-instrument-value-shortcuts/46055
Or this:https://forum.renoise.com/t/topic/43378
But it would nicely fit into advanced editor, too! A shortcut is always a secret.
