2 Vst Plugins Paths

Hi guys

I am very excited today. I moved [on desktop PC] from old WinXP to Vista x64 few months ago and found that some vst plugins [like Edirol Orchestra and some other, to me very important] does NOT work :(
But few days ago I installed [for a test] Windows7 x64 and start installing VST plugins… And - Edirol Orchestra WORKS!!!

So - Vista goes to trash!!! I will have to install many more VST stuff and will make definitive decision, but for now Win7 rocks!

Anyway, the reason I posted this is a question.

Are OLD and NEW VST plugins share the same VST path [for example:]

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins\

OR there are separate VST paths on Win7, like this:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\ ?

I found just (x86) directory, but on x64 - no Steinberg directory for VST plugins.

In case that after installing many many VST instruments, they appear on two places, like here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugins\ [for old, WinXP working VSTs] and
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\ [for new VST stuff]

… Can you add third directory path to next Renoise version preferences [Plug/Misc / VST Plugins] so we can store old and new VST instruments and also have possibility to add our own VST path?

Thank you for your time.

All best
Nick

There is no technical reason why you must install VST plug-ins to C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPlugins\ or something like that. It’s just a legacy location from the old days when Cubase was the only DAW that supported VST plug-ins, so many installers will suggest to use this location by default. But during the install process you can simply change that location to something that works better for you (unless the installer is a piece of shit and doesn’t allow that).

Nothing is stopping you from simply doing this:

  • C:\VST\Old\
  • C:\VST\New\
  • C:\VST\Custom\

… and then setting one of the paths in Renoise to C:\VST\ which covers everything you have, leaving the second path free for random stuff you need to test or some other special purpose.

Hey, good idea! I was never thinking VST/old and VST/new examples will work both if add just VST directory! So in my case, I can copy my VST plugins to anywhere I want, in this case, in old VST dirs. I have lots of vst stuff and I think 40% of them don`t allow to change VST installation path.

If your VSTs had installers they may have registry entries and wont like just being move. Less likely with freeware but very probable with anything you’ve bought.
