I was also about to reply back asking for help with ALSA versus JACK MIDI and getting multiple devices out but this thread came to the rescue: jack and midi sudo modprobe snd-virmidi enable=1,1,1,1,1 and now a2jmidid has a bunch of inputs that can be selected as instruments renoise, and outputs that can be wired up to LV2 synths in Carla.
