New user here. I don’t have a qwerty keyboard, which means the default keyboard piano is all over the place for me. Even if I were to use a different MIDI keyboard to input notes, all of these keys are functionally useless for me because I cannot map them to other functions either. I think it would be nice if remapping these keys was possible.
Perhaps a global switch would be a good idea.
That is, you press a specific, reassignable command, and instead of being used to play notes, the QWERTY keyboard is freed up to be assigned to specific functions of your choosing (in the usual way).
What does this allow? Both. For example, you press “only the D key”, and you could assign that to deleting a note in the pattern editor. Things like that (it would be very convenient for some composers). Then you press the “global switch” command, and you have the entire QWERTY keyboard back to playing piano notes.
That way you would have all the individual keys free to reassign.
I imagine this would require some internal adjustments to the current system.
Personally, I find this topic very interesting. It would allow for greater flexibility.
This is my own simple take on how to implement that type of request. I hope you find it helpful.
