Ambiviolent ...Constructive Criticism?

Hey guys,

I’ve made a drum n bass track and I’d love some feedback/costructive criticism on it as it feels like I should do more with it, but I’m unsure what. Also, what ways are there to make the breaks sound a bit less messy?

Cheers!

Nice hefty bassline you got there.
Does a better job grinding meat than my own meat grinder.

The bass is way too overpowering and your kicks aren’t coming through the mix because of it. Make sure you cut the bass around the 100-300 Hz mark a bit to let the punch of the kick and the snare through. It’s not the breaks that are messy, it’s the bass. What I’ve been doing is instead of having one bass sound, separate it into a sub and a top. The sub will be about 20-80 Hz and the top will be about 400-1500 Hz. This way it lets the punch of the drums through the mix without the drums having to fight to stay present, and you can also independently control the modulation of the top without worrying about the clarity of the sub.

If you haven’t done it already, I’d sidechain the bass to the kick so it drops in volume whenever the kick sounds.

Hiya stereochan! That’s pretty wicked :3

Hyaena is right, seperating the bass should help - and sidechaining an eq should make even punchier. Other than that it sounds terrific, nice sound design!

Alright, I’ll try to EQ the bassline again properly. Honestly, I was afraid of taking away too much from it, but I guess I ended up doing just that by not toning it down a bit… I’ve already sidechained to the kick, but I guess it’s not sensitive enough. Thanks for the help!
