Made this one day last week and thought I ask people here what they think of the mixing. It’s not mastered yet however.
nice drums
the frequency mix seems pretty good. the stereo on the snare seems to have out-of-phase L and R channels, though. perhaps you could put a stereo expander on it and turn it closer to mono. on the other hand, when I turned it louder, the snare sounded pretty good, so your call.
the drums slicing has some odd timing… seems some slices have bits at the end that shouldn’t be there
Thanks
Yeah I don’t mind the stereo on the snares as I prefer a wide sound. It good to know that it sounds good louder.
Can you explain about the rouge bits that you think shouldn’t be there? I just used a full break sample and the 09xx command to do the beat rather chopping it up so it’s probility from that.
yep you’re right the song-bpm is lower then the drumloop bpm.
But the drumloop itself is a very nice sample!
I like the overall atmosphere of the stuttering beat and relax sounds very much,
but it also feels like a long intro to …something
keep on tracking!!
Thanks, if you want the loop I could post a link to the xrns to share.
I can’t really explain GFK… because you’re using 09xx it starts playing into the next hit too soon sometimes. I’d just chop all the hits (or groups of hits) manually into different samples if I were you. That way you can control the sound of each hit individually.
That said, as Mr Linch pointed out, it may just be a tempo issue. Try jumping tempo a few bpm and see if it fixes it
Byte-Smasher, does these odd bits distract you from the music and affect you from listening to the music or can you ignore them?
I also used the “fit sample to whatever lines” thing also, so. I’m tempted to try and find the bits and highlight them in the sample and turn them down.
The timing is rather simple also, 4/4.
I think it’s my processing that is bringing out weird acoustics from the break. My stereo widening.
Also does the bit sound like “ha” or scratching?
I would love to have that loop!!
I allready tryed to sample it from your song
I played with the beat a little. I changed the slice to 0970 on 100. I added a second efx column and added FOFF on line 1, F00B to 100, and F0FF to 101.
Just an idea, though I’m sure you’ve corrected it by now.
No I haven’t
Sounds good. Why don’t you post a link up for me?
Well, I took a look at the song on my rig at home and tried my suggestion. With some more experimentation I found I was wrong. That won’t work. BYTE-SMASHER had the best suggestion as far as a manual chop. Its more work but the result will be better.
Here’s a link to Kaneel’s demonstration on how to do it.
As far as the swish / scratch sound, I heard it in the raw sample, so its part of the beat and is amplified by the efx.
I noticed that you’ve used a lot of effects and processing for all of your sounds. Especially the drums. You might want to cut down on some of them to help with clarity and definition. To start, I would kill the stereo wide effect on the master track. You already have that on the drums. You also have a lot of compression and a send with more effects on the drum track.
While the beat sounds cool, the sounds are getting mashed up. Use little or no gain, no maximizer, and just pump the volume in the drum track on the mixer page for volume. Modify the stereo effect on the drums and be gentle with the compressor.
To be fair, I’m a bit of a minimalist and also very new to all this.
~w~
Yeah I noticed that fx on the drums can be to much and when I turn the effects off that the drums are really nice and clean. I actually rendered a version of that for me to listen to.
I think that the compression is speeding up the drums as well.
The swish I know about. I think you can get rid of that with a MSED plugin. I think it’s the drummer making the sound.
