I’ve tried extensive searching - but I can’t find any info on this topic. I’m a total Noob at trackers, so I’ve never heard of this before. Can anyone explain it to me?

the “capture nearest instrument” feature allows the user for automatic or on-demand selection of the instrument which has the nearest note to the pattern cursor.
for example, if you have this situation:

C-4 01
C-4 02
--- --
--- -- <= the cursor is here
the “capture nearest instrument” feature will autoselect instrument 02.
by enabling autocapture, this process will be automatic upon cursor movement, otherwise you have to call it whenever you need by pressing the capture button or using the related key shortcut
