Collab Time! (Dnb/dubstep)

Okay let’s do this. I’m up for collabs! I’ve been a renoise user for the better part of a year now… my interests are mostly drum & bass and dubstep, but i’m always interested in other genres, specifically house and trip hop, I just haven’t tried my hand at producing them yet. I haven’t spotted many dubstep/drum & bass producers on here but I know you’re out there!

Some of my favourite artists:

DNB - Black Sun Empire, Noisia, Spor, Mutated Forms, Loadstar, Logistics, Alix Perez, Rockwell, Icicle, Wilkinson, Concord Dawn, Phace…

Dubstep - Skream, Chasing Shadows, Joker, Jakes, Mensah, Koan Sound, 16 Bit…

hopefully that gives you a good idea of the kind of sound I want to make… but even then I’m a pretty diverse person musically. So hit me up if you’re interested.

I’m not a big dub-step head. But I do love my drums and basses. Throw me a general song format. Maybe starting with pads. I can throw some drums on top of it. I say we trade an xrns file. After you do pads and I do drums. You punch in the next step. Bass. We can always change and remove parts later on.

Nice! Not too sure on format right now… but I’m in the mood for some smooth melodic drum & bass. How about I write the first 40-50 seconds with some pads & piano and send it your way? from there you can chose when to drop the drums in, etc…

I think setting up a dropbox might be useful. We could drop the xrns file on there, along with any vst’s we use, any wav files, instruments, samples, etc.

That sounds good to me. I’ll throw some ‘mellow’ drums over your work and then add another 40-50 seconds of drums over the tail end of it where you can throw more melodic stuff over the drums. Pretty much just overlapping ideas. I like my drums a little crazy. But I’ll try to tone it down a little and keep it mellow. It’s probably a good idea to have the note box pop up on load so we can try to keep track of past/present/future what’s been changing, what should be fixed. Maybe even keep it like a blog or log.

As far as VST(i)'s go. I don’t use them. So it might be a good idea to render them to sample.

Any way I can contact you other than on here? Email? Skype? Msn? Rather than spam the forum.

By all means go crazy with drums, I love crazy drums too.

tracks like this for example I LOVE! It has that mellow edge but it has crazy punchy drums at the same time. We could aim for something like that.

As for the log idea… I’ll set up the dropbox soon. On that we can have a .txt file, log.txt, or something… where we can detail all that we’ve been adding to the track. We can also put all rendered samples up onto dropbox… that’s if the rendered samples don’t get included in the project file. I’m a little confused over that. Does the project file come with all instruments saved inside of it?

Personally I think PMing me on Renoise would probably be best. I check this site more than my e-mail.

DropBox is a good idea. I’m not familiar with it, but I’m willing to check it out.

And as far as external VST(i) go. I don’t belive Renoise will save them where I could use them unless I have the vst on my computer. I don’t use VSTs so I wouldn’t be the right person to ask.

Also. It’d probably be a good idea to export the track when you send the .xrns just to be sure we’re getting the same picture.

Why a seperate log file though? Can’t we just log in the song comments box?

Actually why not write on the forum thread? Would it be considered spamming? Since it’s a collab, is there a reason to close it out? Or would it be cool to leave it open to whoever wants to throw something into it? We’d probably end up with a pretty intense piece of work if there were a lot of people throwing their thoughts into the same piece.
