I has to do with selection in the pattern editor; hold down one of the modifier keys (shift or alt) while left mouse button dragging inside the pattern editor. Note when holding down alt while dragging you’ll have a finer selection, being able to select just the volume or panning column for example. If you hold down shift and click somewhere above or beneath the cursor in the pattern editor the selection range will change accordingly. Try it out yourself!
