Elaborate sample

hi,

I’m trying to transform a sample, but it’s too bass-heavy. I used a track by Sister Sletge, “He’s the Gradest Dancer,” as an intro, and a vocal sample from Looperman, “looperman-a-8300535-0024573-six-feet-endless.” I added a bass and drums. But it doesn’t sound clear.

How can I make it sound clearer?

thank

what does this mean, clear? Eq’íng?

You can sidechain the kick with the bass heavy sample, either ducking the volume and or through a compressor, Perhaps the bass of the kick is doing weird phasing things with the bass inside the main sample, could try to invert the phase of the waveform and check if this improves or worsens things? If you don’t mind, share the xrns so folks can tinker with the mix  .

Hi, following your feedback, I’m posting the XRNS file so others can take a look at the track… I don’t really have a method; I use Renoise as my DAW. Thanks everyone! Enjoy listening!

Do you remember this thread? Check again und you’ll find the answers.

This is your EQing. Guess why it’s too bass heavy…

Quick improvement of your song:

  • Adjustment of instrument volumes
  • Panning of instruments
  • Mono Mix (checked through speakers)
  • EQing, filtering and compression in each track
  • Sidechaining the Synth Bass

Edit:
You might want to have a closer look at the vocals, because these vocal samples do have a different basic sound and need to be adapted. Through headphones the second part seems to be a liitle too loud. Anyway, this was just a quick improvement, it’s still far from being finished. But this is something that YOU will have to learn yourself, and according to your statement in the linked thread it’s exactly what you want. Always think of the basics. EQing, filtering, compression, mono mixing. Bass too heavy, what can you do? Reduce bass! Mudiness all over the place, what can you do? Reduce bass! Clearness not enough, what can you do? Reduce bass and/or increase higher frequencies! Self-explanatory! Always proceed logically. And check the mixing thread.

Contest idea: Grab a sampled loop like olivier’s funky loop, and build a song in your preferred style around it. It’s not allowed to change the loop, it has to be played in its original state. The one who created the most satisfying song out of the sampled loop wins. Call it MBC whatever or simply whatever. LC perhaps? Good idea or too easy/normal?

hi

Thanks for the link, but I can't seem to get the bass to go down, even in mono... The sound is a bit muffled...I still have a lot to do on this track; the vocals might need to be lowered, and lots of other things. I tried compressing the bass, but it made it worse, or maybe I'm just not doing it right. Thanks for the heads-up, it's true that it could be a fun exercice.

That’s because you deleted almost every filter, so you’re not filtering properly, which means all the low ends that are causing mudiness are there again. And your EQing isn’t good, it seems you’re not sure what to do.

No offence, but as long as you don’t learn the mixing basics, how to filter, how to EQ, how to use a compressor, which devices need to be put in single tracks and which to be put in the master, you’ll mess up every time. You really need to understand what you’re doing.

Are you looking for a sound like this?

Check the track effect chains and how that devices were used. As you can see filtering and EQing is essential. Get rid of the low ends by filtering, gain clearness by increasing higher frequencies by EQing. This mix sounds clear to me now, both through headphones and speakers.

Hi, you’re right, I realize now that I should have focused on mixing before trying to compose tracks where both are done simultaneously… I started backwards and I really don’t know how it works. I absolutely have to work on all of this… I’ll try to do it on this track and the next ones. Thanks for your constructive feedback.

Good idea! Just started up the next MBC so it’ll have to wait but I could see this being a fun challenge for folks down the line
