as you may know, Quartz 2D Extreme was implemented in MacOS Tiger. Unfortunately it got disabled in the public Tiger release due to a lack of time for debugging before Tiger got launched.
Quartz 2D Extreme allows MacOS to handle 2D graphic operation through the GPU. As a result your whole macos desktop is driven by the GPU in OpenGL mode.
You can enable Quartz 2D by opening Terminal and typing :
Oh man I so need Tiger.
How’s renoise running on your iBook, SoundSquare? I have a similar machine, 'cept it’s the 1ghz older version.
Does Quartz Extreme 2D help reduce Renoises cpu usage, or just the usage of other apps?
well i haven’t used Renoise much since i’ve got Tiger, i only made a few tests and as far as my iBook is concerned i got more ressources for Renoise since i enabled Quartz2D. Less CPU usage (about 10/15% less), so far so good. But Renoise is quite slow on my iBook, it needs some optimization, i’m sure the Renoise devs can do much better about it. I still use Renoise on my PC for now, and on iBook “for fun” without VSTis. The weird thing is that Renoise is not going better when i use my external M-Audio Firewire Audiophile on the iBook than with the integrated audio chip.
i’m not blaming the devs at all, i just think Apple machines can do much better with Renoise in terms of CPU load. I heard Tiger makes things easier for devs, but once again i don’t know anything about coding so i just keep crossing my fingers to see a faster Renoise for Mac. I’d love to throw my PC away.
