Entering note off while editing polyphonic patterns with the shift key

I’m hoping someone can help me solve a problem i encounter frequently while sequencing. When entering polyphonic patterns with the computer keyboard, the shift key is very useful. If you hold shift and enter a note, the cursor will shift over to the next note column. You can build a chord by continuing to hold shift and renoise will even add additional columns for you if needed. When you are finished entering the chord, you can release shift and the cursor will then jump back to the inital column and shift downward by the editstep value. This is fast and feels very natural.

The problem: You can’t enter “Note Off”. If you enter a note off while holding shift, renoise will immediately shift downward, which breaks the workflow. Is there a way around this? Am I missing a keybind? I don’t believe it’s possible using scripts.
