Filter modulation + ghost notes = popping?

Description:

Ghost notes create audible “pop” when filter modulation is enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Renoise.
  2. Load/create sample.
  3. Enable sampler filter modulation.
  4. In pattern editor: Create note-on (with instrument number), followed by ghost note.
  5. Play (you will hear a “pop” for each note-on event without an instrument number).

Expected results:

Note will play with filter applied at specified cutoff.

Actual results:

Note plays with filter applied, but with an unwanted very short-duration “pop” with a lot of high frequency (possibly low frequencies as well).

Misc. Notes:

Things that “enhance” the popping effect:

  • “Purer” samples without noise (unless cutoff is turned very low).
  • Cutoff below 1.0 but greater than 0.0.
  • Lower resonance.
  • Popping happens even if the ghost note volume is set to 00 (so there is no sound, just a pop).

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the detailed report. This indeed should not happen and will be fixed in the next update.

Renoise is recycling the filter’s buffers here for the new note, which it should not, as there’s new audio coming in - it should only copy the filter parameters.
