I know this song features Surge’s capabilities a lot more prominently than Renoise’s, but it would not have been possible without Renoise! Just found this software and I’m lovin it. Anyway, this is some humble hero worship of Miles Davis and Fela Kuti. Thank you to the Renoise community for making this possible.
EDIT: The percussion is built up from samples, mostly those included with Renoise. Every other instrument is a patch in Surge XT.
Thank you! I have played other (non electronic) instruments for a long time, but twenty years ago I took a course on electronic music, mostly analog synthesizers…and then played only acoustic since then. I have to say I like Surge a lot more than the 50 year old synths I was playing with in that course!! But back before then, when I was a teenager I played around with Impulse Tracker a bit. That’s actually how I found my way to Renoise, because I came across some of that old (terrible!) music I made back in 1998.
But also about half the instruments/patches were straight from the Surge community. Others I just tweaked. So I can’t claim credit for those. The wacky Miles Davis sound is the only patch I built up from scratch.
@MeGP Great. I like the way you makes complex tonal changes in a simple melody with almost only single notes. This was a good study.
Are you making full use of automation to change the parameters of Surge?
Or are you recording that audio while manipulating the parameters with a MIDI controller?
@tkna Just recording the MIDI live with a controller. I have an old Yamaha S30 that works great for that…has a number of controllers on it, two foot pedals, a bunch a knobs… I have not explored Renoise’s automation much yet!
I see. If I assign CC well, I may be able to create rich expressions with mouse operation, a modulation controller on a MIDI keyboard, or just one knob. Thanks.
