I just picked up some Mackie MR8’s to try and get better at mastering. It figures that the first song I do with them is a hard oldskool techno tune… which is a genre that almost always sounds better grungy. =)
I used Predator (vst synth) quite a bit in this song. Predator really seems to lend itself to hard rave sounds. I’m very open to feedback, especially on the mixing. I’m sure there is massive room for improvement, especially considering the levels were so saturated on this song, but it kind of went with what I was trying to do. Comments would be appreciated though.
Anyways, for any folks that love hard classic rave/ oldskool techno, I hope you like it!
Sounds good here, everything comes through alright. Heavy basskicks & ravey goodness. I think there is a breakbeat loop in it though that has a click embedded in it…at first it didn’t bother me, but when you turn up the bass near the end, it sounds like the track is clipping. Does have it charm though
Thanks Jonas. I guess it’s kind of easy to master a song when your writing in a style of music where the heavier and more distorted it sounds the better it gets. =)
At least I managed to make my voice sound pretty imposing!
The kick is causing clipping, especially near the end. I’d suggest, if distortion on the kick is deliberate, that you chose a better distortion. If it’s just clipping accidentally, then try shoving a maximizer on your master with default settings to prevent that.
Distortion should be finessed… if you want a nasty distortion, choose a nasty distortion… don’t just let it clip, it sounds sloppy.
