How to get ALSA to work in Renoise

Hello, I am not sure why but using ALSA seems to have better latency than when i use JACK and would like to use it when using renoise, But I keep getting this error when attempting to use ALSA. Reaper opens with ALSA absolutely not issue and am not experienced enough with Linux to understand why Renoise won’t. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

alsa is trying to open hw with settings that the card cannot handle.
What are your output settings?

Hi Thank you for your reply,

I am also gettings this error which seems to mean that my ALSA driver is in use somewhere else. I have tried disabling things that might be using it but to no avail. I suppose Reaper has some kind of mechanism that moves everything out of the way.

Here are my settings. In Reaper I am able to go down to 64 buffer no issues.

Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately, alsa does that. It reserves playback.
So if you already have a browser running or something that accesses the sound card,
you have to close it. Unfortunately, it does that even if you play on the “default” device in Renoise and switch to hw: when playing a song.
You have to stop the sound completely and then it works again.
I recommend not using alsa. Install pipewire-jack and use jack everywhere.
The latency between alsa and jack is not that bad.
There are far more pluses than minuses.

I recommend “qpwgraph” for connecting cables

Thank you for your help. I will give it a go.
