I dont get the sense of named Vol, Pan, Dly FX ROWS?!

Some Question to the “Vol”, “Pan”,“Dly” FX Rows. I thought till now that each of this named FX Row’s is exclusiv for the respective effect. Vol Row for Volume Fx, Pan Row for Pan FX, Dly Row for Delay FX. But now i see, that i can do a Vol FX on Pan FX Row and an Envenlope FX on Vol FX Row and a PlaySample BackwardFX on Vol Row and many many other combinations. Why is this so? Is that a bug, or bad design, or what is the reason for this. I ask because Colorcoded FX markings can turn into a Mess with this and the readability for entire songFX information goes down.

PS: I search the mostly using upfucked PatternFX Renoise song for theme testing!!! The more FX and the more wild mixed the FX is the better!

definitely a feature, not a bug
sometimes I want to use vol or pan column for an fx command if I’ve already got something going on in the fx column (and don’t feel like making another one) and just need a quick B0 or B1 or a cut or a Yx. Also definitely useful for generative processes where you have a chord on a line, but only want one note playing at a time to create melody. Each note gets its’ Yx with Y00 in the fx column

You can do effects on the volume like pitch up and down etc but you can only increment-decrement with values 10 ( 16 in decimal ) because the first place is reserved for the effects name
Like this D1 of Df
While in the dedicated effects column ( note track or track ) you can do this D17 or U25 , so it makes sense to uses the dedicated fx track if you want more resolution .
I think it’s great we have this freedom .( a value of zero just repeatst the entered value …)

Why not make an additional FX Column? Its only a single click? And for the clearness and readability of Song FX information much better, because its Row structured and not mixed. I can make you a brainfuck Pattern with this 3 named FX Rows only and 3 colors, after watch you want run on toilett to puke. I personally would prefer more structured organisation in the PatternView. But ok, we have to deal with it…

This FX only work on named FX columns? Then I have to ask “Why”?

yeah, man, do what you like! renoise offers options. you don’t have to use them

Totally. That said, the user is in charge of how to organize the structure of a pattern, Now that you know that those columns can double as quick FX columns too, and you have concluded that you don’t like it, you can choose to not use them like that from now on. I don’t think your Renoise license will be revoked…

Yes ok, but when the named FX Columns exactly like unnamed one’s and i can all do with unamed too, then for what exist named one’s? The simply unnamed “FX” Columns can do all the job. Simplicity is ergonomic! Or is there an historical background for this division in named and unnamed FX Columns. I meaned always the Columns not the Rows. (Translation Failure by me) I only try to understand the concept.

I may not be completely correct on this but older trackers only had one FX column, and the other columns may have been updated by developers for added functionality. It most likely that these additions were made like this to keep a tracker application small enough to fit in a floppy disk, to use as little RAM as possible, and to fit a whole pattern horizontally unto a small CRT monitor. Renoise adopts these functionality for historical reasons, as you said, which is especially useful for loading old mod files created with old software and maintaining compatibility.

It is also possible that people who have used older trackers in the past would have adopted a workflow that included using the volume, pan, and delay columns for these extra effects, and in order to make these old users comfortable with Renoise, they also had to be included here.

Every note column has it’s own dedicated effects column ( see blue rectangles on screenshot ), this was a new feature ( was is 2.8 or 3.0 …? ,don’t remember )
ANd then we have Eight FX channels that work on ALL note columns at once (green )
