I agree.
Mixing well can just mean that the volume and pan is correct.
Even more impotant is that instruments fit together.
When I really got lost in mixing, I was wondering why some good Fasttracker II and even Amiga 4ch modules sounded so good. They have none of the DAW functions we have now.
I then downloaded some FT2 .xm modules by Jeroen Tel and Thomas ‘Drax’ Mogensen, and got chocked about how perfect they sound without using any effects.
My conclusion was simple: Their selection of sounds fit together and they simply balanced vol and pan correctly.
If instruments dont fit, it is simply because they dont fit.
Thats the hard, but useful, lesson I have learned.
A little bonus experience:
I found some .xm jazz modules (‘fast funk’ and ‘Junk funk’) by Tor ‘Walkman’ Gaussen , and I tried for fun to add a compressor on the master track. (In Renoise ofcause)
Turning On and off. And there was almost no difference on the result with or without compressor!
That means that everything was in perfect balance in his xm modules!
A compressor in the master track isn’t the right tool for checking the balance. If you want to check the balance you should use a stereo expander that’s set to mono:
Have you ever wondered what the soundtrack would sound like if Bud Spencer had starred in an Edgar Wallace film?
We’ll never know… but here is my theory:
Actually the title was choosen because it all sounds like a container..
What a great track !! In the right hands, someone who could add the right vocals to it it would be a banger.I have a thing since i was a child, when i hear music my mind always tries to find vocals for it,after all i first started singing and many many years later i found out i can make songs too
I’m touched. Thanks
I was in a little doubt about it after upload, but I’m really glad to hear you liked it
Funny, I also have the imagination to put words on notes in my head. When I compose something, I often ‘sing’ the phrases in my head with nonsens words to remember the melody and continue composing when cooking or doing whatever inbetween tracking
Vocals on this song.. well why not Thanks for the idea. Mabye my wife could contribute. She sings good.
I make all kinds of music
This is my latest.
Its a remix of Julllian lennon - To late for goodbyes
Seperation in audacity , time squeeze to .
percusion from the renoise library and the synts from surge XT
Mix is shit because everything is done on el cheapo in ears .
Its still not done but ik like it .
The song is ready. The file is about 7MB but it is 30 minutes long. I kinda like it.
I feel that lame -V 9.999 is surprisingly not bad sounding for a dramatic reduction in file size. It seems to work well enough for simple applications.
EDIT:
I thought the above version might have had a problem because it was converted from mp3 to mp3, so I re-encoded this one from wav. I think the clicking sound has been reduced.
Thanks for listening. The encoding is fine. lame is great.
The cpu governor is powersave, and there is a click in there because I didn’t take enough of the value called quantum. I don’t mind too much as I often prefer the grating and have left it as is in favor of momentum.
Experimented with polymelody and polyrhythms (just a tad), while keeping a classic 4/4 signature structure and beat. Played on how human ear perceive sounds, having lots of different melodic elements and sound at once: focusin on one or the other change the perception of the track without loosing the overall feeling. I think the mix helps for that, open to feedback, I worked on this track for a long time and my ears might not be objective anymore.
Also, tried to push myself a bit, forcing myself to do a longer song than usual (but still trying to make it interesting and not just extend it to extend it).
