Inland Empire By David Lynch

So anyone heard of/seen the new david Lynch movie Inland Empire?

I really want to see this. Even though Im sure I won’t understand crap of it, and it’ll probably scare the hell out of me.

Anyone know if it’s any good?

I have seen it. It oozes with unique atmosphere like many other Lynch’s movies, but it’s also very heavy to watch. I don’t have any analysis on it, because quite frankly I didn’t really make anything out of it. As an experience it is very interesting and I would recommend everyone to go see it. I’m not in a hurry to see it again though, maybe after a few years. Lost Highway is still my personal favourite of Lynch’s movies.

Nice, didn’t expect this subj to pop out here.
Here’s a very interesting forum on the topic, there are many views on the plot and metaphysical puzzles.

I must say that I harldy see any movies for a loong while after seeing a film by Lynch. Because his films make me laugh at everything else coming out of that cliche-ridden screen-blink factory we call Hollywood. I can’t help it.

It’s not a typical hollywood movie, where everything is thrown at your face, visual fx, the plot, the moral, the ‘goodVSbad’ and stuff. No, this is more like an experience. It speaks in a lot of ways, on many levels. You must be able to understand the subtle language of a symbol (the ability which modern movies seem to ignore totally; they don’t need a thinking viewer, they need a 100% visually satisfied viewer.)

Inland Empire is probably the last real movie around, and a very personal one, which scares the hell out of ya, yes, but only to wake you up, perhaps from a more disturbing dream - the ‘fakeness’ of our own lives. It’s a reality check: “Are you the real YOU, or just a fake? Are you playing your own, unique part in this life, or have you swapped it for someone else’s along the way?”
These are tough questions to answer, and even to ask, for a lot of people.

If J.Salinger is still around somewhere, I bet he really digs Lynch.

I haven’t seen Lynch’s last masterpiece yet. I’m an adorer, I’m going to see it soon. My fav ones are Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway, the latest probably is the best movie I’ve ever seen. Also his short films/animations are admirable, esp. those flashes he has distributed over the net…

BTW has anyone seen “The Number 23” by Joel Schaumacher? It has some similar characteristics to Lynch’s movies… It’s a nice film.

Yeah it is amazing. Watched it a while ago and thought it was amazing. Lost Highway is better though, I think, but this is pretty inmpressive. The opening scenes are wicked.

 What flashes? Are they still to see somewhere?

The one with Jim Carrey? OMG what a load of doodles. To me it was one of the most miserable attempts to create a suspense. A complete waste of time and celluloid. Reminded me somehow of ‘Signs’ by Mel Gibson, where at the end he goes bashing crop-circle producing aliens (!!!) with a baseball bat (!!!) in his freakin basement. :D
So much hogwash one can only come up with under a severe hangover. That goes for viewing experience as well.
Comparing this ‘material’ to a Lynch film? Hmmmmmm-m-m-m…

Blue Velvet, maybe Dune, the rest is self-indulgent crap produced by a rich man with a reputation for making “genius” films. At least in 1986 there was no context for his style and it came out of nowhere. Now, whatever he decides to do will have the hordes praise it. I’m not saying his films aren’t good, they are very good, but it’s the difference between U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday and the drivel that they produce today.

LOL, totally forgot about these! DUMBLAND!

These ruled. It was a random out of nowhere web project and was a big risk, and was awesome, and funny!

I stand corrected.

A google search will reveal many…

“Twin Peaks” definately is one of my all-time faves. I usually hate 80s series because it’s all so awkward (the fashion and the music), but to my surprise this one really, really scared me. A pity it got cancelled halfway trough. Huge cliffhanger at the end.

Then I watched “Lost Highway” and didn’t like it at all. Two years later I watched it again and started to hate it.

Then I watched “Mullholland Drive” and didn’t like it. Two years later I watched it again and suddenly liked it very much.

I dunno whats wrong with me … And these are the only movies I have seen from him so far.

However, as I had a discussion with some guy lately : For me there is this “good” kind of mystery as in “pi” or “memento” or “Serial Experiments Lain” or even “lost”, when you watch a movie/series and when it’s over you think “WTF?” but all is good because atleast some things make sense, and then you watch it again and gain abit more insight, but still most is in the dark. I do love that and “Mullholland Drive” was one of that movies.

And then there is “bad” mystery where you go “WTF?” because nothing makes sense at all and no matter how much you think about it you just can’t get a grip. “Lost Highway” is such a movie.

I do like weird stuff, but I need the feeling that it is too complicated or I don’t know enough to understand it, not that it’s just random bullshit.

Raymond Chandlers “New York Trilogy” is also something I hated, just a bunch of weird stuff going on without any connection and any idea behind it. And that’s also considered a “classic”.

On the other hand I currently read David Foster Wallaces “Infinite Jest”, 1200 pages at some 7-point font (it’s Huge with a capital H as he would say), I am at page 350, nothing makes sense yet (I even don’t have any idea what it’s actually about at this point), but it’s a blast to read.

PS before I am off to bed : But Badalamentis (?) music for his music was always really great.

Eraserhead FTW.

Indeed, Indeed…

Never seen this movie, but have read alot about it lately, due to all the fuss around Lynch recently.

And… What can I say?

I’ve seen a good/sick/creative/confusing 10 minutes of it in Youtube:

…and, well, I can tell why this was Stanley Kubricks fav movie. Their way of creating movies look very similar, the long takes, the athmosphere…

I’ll no doubt have a look at both mulholland drive and lost highway, and I can’t wait to see Inland empire!

I’m glad there’s someone out there who is willing to make movies without having to explain everything to the viewer during the movie.

Anyone seen Saw3?
The way they tried to explain everything at the end of the movie, with backdrops, reruns of certain scenes and all while they explained the whole plot just pissed me off, i was like “well, if i’d seen this movie one more time, I would have gotten all that, but I won’t now, because you think i’m too stupid to get it, or you think I won’t see the movie again, which I won’t now”.

will have to watch asap then ,!!! anything odd , and unpredictable I am into !!!

my favs lost highway , wild at heart , eraserhead ,

Mulholland Dr. has 10 clues on the cover of its original DVD suggested by Lynch to be considered carefully in order to solve the film’s mystery…

BTW, AXXoN N. ----------> ;)

will have a view of this, as most of his work i do enjoy.
