I don’t know if this is possible in renoise:
Without manually editing notes, is it possible to gate an intrument with another one (note wise).
(Say) a long pad instrument gated by drums in another column?

You are talking about SideChaining, and should do a search in the forum for that.
In my opinion, there are no good ways to SideChaining in Renoise. Some others thinks the opposite.

It does exactly what you describe, except that the drum volume is also affected by the envelope.
However, you are able to counter-act this by drawing a custom volume envelope for the kick drum. Or you can replace the strange “ringmod” sound with an automatable instrument (VST), in which case you’d be able to target the instrument’s volume, filter or whatever, and leave the kick drum unaffected.
Bonus info: automation devices can work on instruments that are actually playing in other tracks as well (cross-track modulation)
