This is hands down the most depressing thing I’ve read all day:

Gregory Coleman, the drummer who played the beat, never received any royalties and died homeless in 2006.

someone made an amen break out of WOOD! https://www.etsy.com/listing/221250205/amen-break-waveform-laser-cut-37x11?ref=pr_shop

Sorry I’m a little late to the party. Crazy, Richard Spencer lives in North Carolina (so do I).

Anyway, I think this is a great idea. I am going to give a few $

Just chipped in a few myself.

Not supporting this tbh.

Not that I haven’t used the amen break before, BUT comments like this not only irk me, but really misleads people in to thinking who the funds are going to.

All I ’ Need ’ to say is ’ What a helluva Drummer, Father, and Dear, Dear friend - Forever !

Richard Spencer isn’t the drummer. The drummer died… penniless. Richard is a singer of the band, and even he admitted himself that he really doesn’t see what the big deal about a drum break is, nor has he implied that he listened to what others have done with the break and what kind of an influence it has on music, especially music such as hip hop, jungle/d&B, house, etc… But he knows one thing and one thing only. He want’s to get paid. Quite simply, I did hear him utter the words “… just pay me” when the Benjie B did a documentary over the amen break (Think it was Benji. You can source that out yourself).

The money isn’t going to Gregory Coleman (the actually drummer of the break) since he has passed, nor isn’t anything going to Coleman’s family. I’m sure if he was alive, he would at least appreciate the influences that his work has provided to the world. I would like to think so anyway.

Be that as it may, I wish Richard Spencer well and whatever he receives, he doesn’t blow his money. Things would be much more significant if folks like Dr. Dre, or any of these sampling companies (Hell even Renoise) pitched in some good amounts since they have all sampled, used, distributed the break. So far it looks like people supporting this are just the underground folks who want to feel good by giving something back even though they may or may not really know who they are giving to, or why they are really doing it.

Now talk about supporting the drummer and setting up a fund so his family receive some of the proceeds, then we have a different conversation.
