Latency With Line-In Device

I use Windows 7 32/64bit and have the latest version of Renoise. My usual sound latency with Renoise is pretty good - I’m guessing about 10 to 40ms approx (I use DirectSound, so that adds some latency on top of Renoise’s minimum 5ms latency - I’ll try ASIO later).

However, as soon as I add a Line-In Device, I get an extra 60-100ms apx latency on top of that. This delay occurs without even using the microphone (i.e. I press a key to play a VST or sample instrument, and the 80ms lag happens then as well).

I need to use the microphone for karaoke/speaking and unfortunately this creates a lag I don’t need. Any ideas?

You always receive extra latency for a line-in device that requires some compensation.
You have two latency modes for the line-in device:Midi return mode (some latency is compensated) and Live Recording mode which should apply in your case.
DirectSound is not really the optimal soundcard mode to get tight timings, if you can use ASIO, you are advised to use that feature.
If you want to dimmish the latency with Directsound, you might be able to crunch some latency time by lowering the framerate in the GUI settings. (go from 30 fps to15 or lower).
This will allow Renoise to pay more attention to the audio processes at the cost of screen updates.

Thanks! Yes, I tried turning the automatic PDC off, and it seemed okay then.

I still think a long-term solution is to go with a low-latency ASIO card (ASIO4all didn’t help me unfortunately), so I’ll start hunting for that.
