per-note rewriting is just bad: save your MT2 to XM and open it in Renoise, than start from that
Look, the internet is full of people with ideas that are looking for someone to implement them. The bigger and the more active the place, the less friendly you will be treated, because it’s just such a common thing. There is such a skill as writing great design docs, or managing a team, but having a vague idea is just not enough sorry.
EE, I actually understand your feelings about playing modules in a tracker and experiancing not only the sound but also the techniques. Certainly this leads to a wish that old modules should be playable in the currently most comfortable tracker. Putting the half flamewar about being a passionated scener or an engaged professional aside, the motivation of a convertion is kept low for other reasons IMO.
- Yes, Renoise could theoretically do everything that is happening in an MT2 module.
- Here at the Renoise side there is not even an interest in fully supporting Renoise modules of earlier Renoise versions. The philosophy behind it is that you can never know, how much you need to change the concept of a format to improve it. Therefore the compatibility to older or different formats is not considered that important here.
- So the format will change with a high possibility, throwing away the compatibility of FT2 sample offset mode, throwing away TPL…
- The permanent changes won’t make the conversion impossible but they will require a permanent support of the file converter, inventing new conversion tricks for missing 1:1-pendants in Renoise.
That said, I’m not an enemy of old-fashioned trackerscene features, I love them and Renoise would be my dream-come-true if it had a better oldschool support.
But I compare what I get to what I’m missing in Renoise. And it seems that the philospophy of Renoise is working very well until now because the tracker that I’m most satisfied with is simply Renoise.
For sure the day a tracker comes out that supports Renoise’s UI, DSPs and a better backwards compatibility, I will leave this place here. But yet that day has to come.
Hi guys.
For me, an MT2 -> xrns converter would be a dream come true.
In fact, if nobody else tries to code it, I will give it a shot myself.
I’m not a very good programmer, but it would be worth the trouble to learn how to do it.
I made the switch to Renoise in 2006, and I’ve never looked back - it’s absolutely great.
Before that, I used Madtracker for years and years and started 1000+ projects with it, including 300+ finished tracks.
Quite a few of them have been released, but unfortunately, I do have some stuff that I still need to top off before I can (re)use it. With my system now set to support Renoise 100%, MT2 no longer works properly (not to mention the re-ajusting I have to do when I do have to open a .mt2). And as anyone who has used MT2 for more than just some basic fiddling will know, converting via XM simply does not cut it.
I’m just telling you guys this to illustrate how important a converter would be to me. It would help me get some decent stuff that’s rotting on my drive out into the world
SO, I guess what I’m saying is, I’m going to try to get this to work - one step at a time. First the basic pattern and instrument conversion, then maybe some effect column stuff, and plugin fx later. If anyone has some skills and wants to help, give me a shout.
Thanks a lot. I’ll keep you guys posted.
