Mac Or Pc?

Seriously, I’ve been a PC user for nearly 20 years now. And now I’m considering making the switch. OSX is just looking better and better each day I deal with Windows. And Mac’s DSP processing chip has 0 latency! PC can only get down to about 3ms, afaik…

Using something as pro as Logic 7 would be great for final mastering (though I’d be just as happy if Adobe make a Audition port to mac). Renoise is supported on Mac also, so the switch should be fairly painless.

But the ultimate question I want to ask, what’s the performance of Renoise on Mac? Specifically I was looking to get a laptop, so I can use the beast for live things too. Is there anyone out there who has experience with using Renoise on both platforms? What advantages are there? What fall-backs?

Thanks in advance… :)

(I’m just a little freaked at the idea… feels like I’m going to the Dark Side or something  )

Well, Apple will be announcing a switch to x86 today (according to a lot of news sites, including CNN), so I should wait for a Centrino iBook/Powerbook.

What do you mean with “and Mac’s DSP processing chip has 0 latency!”? Anyway, there is a thread about the performance of Renoise on Mac… It’s not that great yet, but it’s the first release and improvements are in the pipeline.

Total speculation.

Here’s a bunch of analysts saying this is bullshit:

Isn’t there less vsti´s on mac?

yeah but you`ve got more AUs instead.

Ha! Totally true! Check the news sites, it’s officlal now!

Yeah, humiliation!

Shit, now I have to work up my new explanation of why CISC is better than RISC, MMX is better than AltiVec and only an idiot would ever think otherwise! Intel inside, mark of shame?

no “intel inside” is a warning sign ;)

With this announcement I would hold on to your money until they release the Intel based machine. If you buy that nice g5 it will drop in value when the Intel version is released and future (3rd party) applications might not be dual compiled (FAT binaries that support both architectures). I was thinking of buying a mac but this news put it all on hold for me. Well maybe I’ll order that 20 inch Cinema display B)

For those who are interested the presentation can be watched here:

Apple goes intel (Needs QuickTime to view it)

I say, GO FOR AMD!!! :yeah:

especially now that Intel integrates DRM…

Thanks for the advice Rick :)

Trackit: I was considering the Mac because the DSP chip has 0 latency (I’ve been told this, cannot verify it), and OSX is built for Audio processing specifically. Unless Longhorn can beat it, my interest in PCs in fading.

A G5 laptop would be powerful enough, surely?

Man-at-Arms: where is said thread?

Don’t know if the DSP engine runs 0msecs latency, but i do know Macintosh hardware has no latency on the MIDI bus.

IF this is truely hardware related, then i rather advise MIDI endorsers to buy a Mac than a PC.

This midi bus is not hardware integrated as far as I can tell Macs do not come with them standard like the Atari. Is this bus you mentioned an audioengine driver thing?

foo?: you could buy an older mac to hold you over till the intel macs start rolling out

Nah, after all that Bru-haha I’ve set my mind on PC again. Mostly for modding and backwards compatibility reasons.

I’ll get an additional kickass laptop when I get the momey… specifially for live werk.

underperforming?
imo they are far superior, ive noticed quite a big difference between certain things, mainly the processing of very quick gating & cutting.
on my thinkpad with an echo io using mda’s plugin called dynamics, there’s a considerable difference in the sound quality, enough to make me decide to buy a newer ibook so i can move my production over to it. in the windows version of that same plugin it creates lots of artifacts and general static nastiness. of course that not a very good comparison. it dramatically shows the strength of mac over pc. along with pd.
i used pure data for quite a while on windows and linux, i recently installed it on this ibook and its not even comparable how much better it sounds. i would throw sc3 in this conversation but sc3 for windows is written in python so theres absolutely no comparison.

@wen

good to see some fellow estonias on board :yeah:

Tiger users:
If you haven’t alrady done so, install the developer tools and check out a mixer app that comes with it called AULab.

I fell off my chair when I first opened it.

What is it? I only have Panther here… If I google on it I read that it is a sort of plugin tester or…?

@ Rick

it lets you combine interfaces, i guess an example of usage would be to be able to preview before you send audio to another interface. just like a deejay.
i guess another would be to route sound out into an external device an back into another interface giving you the ability to use external midi controlled effects and the audio sent back in to record, further manipulate or just play.
