Macos: Renoise is not utilizing efficiency cpu cores on Mac ARM machines

Hi,

currently Renoise does not seem to use any efficiency cores of Apple ARM cpus. So the setting about used cpu cores is misleading. Tested with Rebench_256.xrns on Sonoma 14.5 on an m1pro.

Since the newest m4 cpus have more efficiency cores than ever, this will result in unneccessary low performance. Reaper, Cubase and Protools are using the those cores, it is clearly possible. It might be possible to get in-depth information via the Reaper or the kvr forum.

I think Renoise should support those cores, or at least fix the cpu core setting, then only displaying the amount of performance cores. Also as I understand it, if Renoise was supporting efficency cores, unused cpu cores (via the setting) should be first the efficiency cores, so if I set 9 of 10 cores, it is ensured that not a performance core now is unused.

Also it might be nice, if Renoise would use the unused cores (e.g. setting 9/10) for the GUI rendering etc. then. I don’t know if this is possible or already happening.

Thanks for consideration!

We’ll need a bit more info here. What exactly is the problem?

I am sorry, maybe I did the testing wrong. Maybe it just looked like the efficiency cores are not used. I am actually quite unsure now. I guess you know if those cores are used or not  Could you enlighten me?

What is weird that the Rebench_256.xrns already starts to audio dropout while cores are not fully used at all. I tried to maximize the load using 2ms and 96khz.

That video shows a really solid and nice almost 100%-like usage of the cores in Reaper.

Do you think I did the test in a wrong way? If I was wrong, I would be happy to delete my misleading posts…
