MIDI Clock question

Hi all ! I got my first ever hardware synth, and finally managed to set it up in Renoise to use it correctly and send MIDI CC. The synth has an internal sequencer, so it needs the MIDI Clock.
However, when setting up the clock, I saw I could send it to a single synth, does that mean that, if I buy another one, I won’t be able to do it ?

Or can it be done with the audio interface ? (mine is plugged through USB right now, but for the next ones I will get the external audio interface), do I need a midi bay ? a specific audio interface and cables ?

Found this post Send Midi Clock Over Multiple Midi Outputs - #30 by kanduvisla but doesn’t answer 100% my question

In this case MIDI thru is your best friend.

If the synths have MIDI thru connections you can use two or more synths by chain connection.

MIDI clock out to synth 1.

Synth 1 MIDI thru to synth 2 MIDI in.

Synth 2 MIDI thru to synth 3 MIDI in, etc.

And note, if the MIDI clock in Renoise should control the synths you have to set it as master and the synths should be set to MIDI clock slave. To set the synths as slave you also may have to use the synths utilities. In that case you should find the instructions in the synth manuals.

MIDI Thru on Synths can sometimes be less than awesome (latency),

these can help:

Thanks!

I managed to work with a single synth (TB-03, so needed the clock for the sequencer), I was just starting to think about my future setup in case I buy some more (I have a list to be honest, but want to check the full workflow)

I knew about midi thru, but would like to avoid this if I start to have more and more synths, to be able to plug / unplug fast, but I’m far from this moment haha

If I can play 2 synths at the same time it’s more than enough I guess, since anyway I freeze them to audio so it will be rare even if I have more than 2 synths, to play more than one at once

Sounds like you have a good grasp on this, will simply add:

When using the tracker as a central sequencer for synths that have internal effects synched to bpm; be mindful of ‘Global Groove’ settings when matching bpm on the unit to whats set in the tracker.
