MIDI controler

Hello all, I’m just getting to grips with Renoise as a n00b and am having trouble assigning my MPK to Renoise, it seems to just apply to one track/sample at a time rather than being an alternative than using the keyboard. I’m mainly using it to improve workflow as using my laptop keyboard is confusing and unintuitive, is there a way to assign the midi keyboard in place of my laptop keyboard piano roll so that it will just play whatever sample is on the channel I’ve selected.

I hope that makes sense, I’m new to computer music so apologies if my terminology is confusing.

Thanks

I have an MPK mini mkII (http://www.akaipro.com/products/keyboard-controllers/mpk-mini-mkii)

I plug in in, then start Renoise, and under Preferences | MIDI I select it from the list of available devices (under MIDI Master Keyboard / MIDI Mapping ), e.g. for In device A.

Then it works for whatever selected track/instrument, just like the PC keyboard.

But, like the PC keyboard, it only applies to whatever you have as the currently selected instrument.

Hmmmmmmmmm still doesn’t seem to be working for me. It’s either no sound or I have to assign it to the instrument from the midi tab. Are you running OSX? Maybe it’s a Mac bug?

I’m using a PC running Win 10 Pro but I’m sure others are using the same or similar MIDI controllers on OSX.

Do you have any instruments loaded in the upper right-hand box?

I restarted today and just plugged it in and it started working exactly as intended. Strange. I guess I must have toggled something by mistake, should have known the old ‘off/on’ would have worked.

Thanks Neurogami, and whilst I’ve got you on the line, is there a way to assign specific drum hits to the pads on the Akai? at the minute it just works like another piano, I’ve created a kit from samples using the auto slice function, can I assign the hits specifically or do I need to make a whole new instrument?

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, but the basic idea is (I think): First re-map the pads so that they are notusingthe same notes/channel as theregularkeys (use the Akai editor software), and then tell Renoise to split the keyboard:http://tutorials.renoise.com/wiki/MIDI

andhttps://forum.renoise.com/t/how-to-split-your-midi-keyboard-in-renoise/43006

I’m pretty sure you can then have the pads directed to specific samples, while the standard keys behave as usual.

Just saw this post today, might be useful:https://forum.renoise.com/t/splitting-midi-keyboard-again/49111

You could “Akai-ize” the instrument by rendering the slices to individual samples, and then use the keymap to move the slices where the drumpad notes register (you should be able to see the piano keys lighting up as you press the pads)

Reason you need to render is, that slicing will create an automatic keyzone layout. Rendering will make you able to edit the keyzones freely.
