I’m working on my entry for SDCOMPO 101. There are 12~13 days left to go.
Right now, I’ve got a mix that I think sounds pretty good on my headphones and monitors with a fairly flat response, but it really isn’t translating well to the car or my headphones that emphasize bass more.
I’m posting the XRNS and MP3, and I’d really appreciate your feedback about how to make the mix better.
Sounds good on Apple HiFi Home Stereo. The bass is strong, but many of the other instruments seem focused in the upper mids and highs so there’s no mud. You could try gently boosting in the mids and sweep for an area that gives just a bit more resonance in the right spot.
Assuming you don’t mind, I’llre-host the filesin case anyone comes across this thread later.
Yeah, that’s fine. It’s all yours, no!?
I’m curious about how you arrived at the frequencies you did in the EQ5s you added to power chords and_bum_. By ear?
A bit of everything. The last word should ofc always have your ear.
For the power chords: I wanted to make its base sit in the mix like a kinda pad, even if with a lot more treble. That’s why I used the 450Hz and one upper and lower octave. The 2.5kHz are actually a fault and set false. Usually I like to emphasize the snare at ~2.5kHz. In this case I cleaned it out on the snare and simply forgot about it. So, instead of the reduction, you actually could fill up the 2.5kHz with a slight narrow boost on the power chords. The 8.4kHz are reduced to take out the worst harshness. Done by ear ofc.
For the bum: a slight boost on 200Hz to boost the sub lows. 68Hz are reduced then to reserve that space for the kick’s prominent lows (quickly localized with a spectrum analyzer on the kick track). 400 & 800Hz boosted as standard ranges for bass. But you could also try to eleminate @ ~300Hz and 500Hz instead of boosting.
Btw… did the entire mix on headphones. So I actually have no idea what it sounds like on speakers.
