Mixing Aid: Use Grainy Pitch Shifting On Master

This came out of a “maybe this will help” idea and turning out pretty useful here.

Same principle as applying filters to focus in on areas of a mix but applying a Pitch Shifter gives another perspective:

  • Shifter smears transients so you can focus in on tonal balance
  • The same smearing will point out any transients that can still fight through the effect, so probably need taming
  • Sudden pitch change giving a quick break to your ears

W.I.P I’ve hard coded a modified script to work with Melda MAutoPitch on Windows to make it convenient for ABing. It works along side Toggle Reference Track tool, but it also just works standalone adding and toggling pitch shifter on master track. Recommended to use with reference to get your ears in ballpark though.

I will probably get round to make the shortcut more universal for use with plugs of choice, but some might find this useful as is. MAutoPitch is part of free bundle, if MAC users want to get it working, let me know and I can get the plug ID from you via another tool and add that in. (afraid no melda on Linux)
