Another thing I can’t find is how to make instruments monophonic.

I’ve been looking that too, a way to make Renoise instruments monophonic and give it a little portamento would be awesome.
05xx portamento command. Not as interactive as using VSTi’s, but you can portamento ANYTHING. Beats, sampled stuff, voices etc.
Just put a 05xx effect every time you play a new note you want to slide to, where xx controls how quickly the note shifts.
Delete the instrument number off notes you don’t want to play from the start of the sample (e.g. C-4 – …0510 where “–” was the instrument number).
For increased smoothness of portamento, double the song SPEED and also the BPM.
