Mutant Breaks #12 Voting thread

It was really hard to choose the top three, but here they are (in no particular order):

Type-A - Amigos Mutantes
Oh f*#k yeah! Those bitcrushed, glitched out vocal chops are absolutely brilliant! And the stringy synthpad at around the minute mark just blew me away! I get a beautiful, calm and bittersweet - maybe even bit of a postapocalyptic feeling. Like those beautiful moments you can experience when you´re in a city at night alone. Everybody is sleeping and there is an eerie serenity everywhere on the empty streets. The production is really good, the track is well mixed and everything feels well balanced and full! Freaking A+ to you sir! Great stuff!

sunnk - augury swore the skull of essence
God damn this is amazing! The sounddesing on this is top notch! Mind bending stuff… When the low frequencies join in my brain just melts away. Overall it feels very organic, yet somehow sterile (in a very good way). It´s like I´m witnessing some sort of alien interaction and I have absolutely no idea what is going on. Yet what I´m seeing is immensely aesthetic in all of it´s alien weirdness. Amazing stuff, truly amazing, much kudos to you!

Make A Wish - Pixel Friends
A lovely chiptune composition. Cute, quirky and positive. The optimistic feeling in this just hit me in the good spot! Made me smile and bop my head. Well composed, beautifully simple and straight forward - very fitting for the genre. This is definetly something I could dance to crazily with my friends on a saturday night-in wearing weird costumes and being all silly and cute. Very enjoyable tune, I like it! Good job!

And here are some minireviews for all the rest who submitted a track:

aemonarmada - GT94mk3MB12
I enjoyed the blend of natural sounding percussion and distorted sounds. Harmonies/choice of scales makes this feel somewhat “middle eastern”. The guitar also brings in a psychedelic vibe (as in that 60´s psychedelic rock way). Ver cinematic, could certainly be used in a moviescene or in a game. Good job!

T3AC VFX - Dperc2 Full10m
Ah, acid! Nice 303 type sequences. Over all I get the feeling like I´m listening to a live jam. To me the mix feels a bit muffled and bassheavy, could probably be fixed with some mixing. Loved the 303 stuff though!

Panos Kostagiannis - Friends By PanosK
Overall a nice tune. The timbres of different instruments seemed first a bit fragmented, but it all came together to make a coherent piece of music in the end. I liked the chiptuneish lead sound very much! I felt it could have used something like just an electric bass or something in the low frequencies to play together with the guitar - but that´s just my personal preferences. Good job!

EatMe - Fulltime Lover
Very driving rhythm and the over all feeling seems to flirt with some jazzy stuff. Love the rhythms of those piano/synth chord stabs. And the trumpet was really cool! For me personally the constant forward drive of the drums became a bit repetitive with not too many fills/breaks in there - but again that´s a personal preference. Good tune and coherent sound overeall!

HeartBeatHero - Lets be friends
Sucked me right in with that bass sound in the beginning! I really liked this one! Good sound choices and everything sits comfortably together in the mix and in the composition. So many freaking cool retro synth sounds! And nice drums! Overall a chill, relaxed and stimulating track! Good job! This is definitely one of my runner up tunes!

Clouds Gone - Fritzens Friends
Ok, this is weird…but very cool! This german fellow keeps on telling me things in a language I really don´t understand through the whole track. But I do feel he´s friendly, maybe my he´s my new mutant friend. Exciting timbral choices and very bright and uplifting feeling overall. Enjoyed it, good job!

Rægæ System - Mutating Frends v02
LoFi jungle - certainly hit the nail on the head with that goal. Nice and coherent tune with some oldschoolish bass stuff. Some sounds felt very compressed data-wise - as in bitcrushed or lowquality mp3 converted etc - as they should in a genre that has “lofi” in the name. Good job!

trusti - take control (my mutant friend)
A decent techno tune. I liked the kick and the synths play really well with it. Very much dance music to my ears. Made me bop my head so well done!

The Comfortably Awkward - soci_anx(overstim 1.3)
Man this is really good! A fascinating track. Very personal and unique composition. The listening experience was very visual - as in story like, made many pictures pop in my head. The mix feels a bit veiled and muddy at times, but it didn´t really bother me much with this one. Sound desing and timbral choices are intruguing and suprising. Absolutely loved the the strings and the choir and the retroish lofi feel they had! That bit took the track as a whole to another level for me! This is like a David Lynch movie in an audio form. Really enjoyed it, well done! Also, I think the artist name fits this perfectly, this is precisely comfortably akward!

Stailer - Best Friend Ever
Good track! Guitars and drums sound very good, and the bouncy synth is spot on! Enjoyed the guitar solo as well. The part after the guitar solo with a bit more rough sounds just glued it all strucure-wise together for me. A very good composition with a bittersweet, kind of postrock-melancholic feeling to it. Really liked it, well done!

Exutoire - Emwan
This made me feel like multiple very different separate worlds very presented to me simultaniously in some sort of a glitched out parallel existence. The harps and pianos took me to a fantasy world of knights and magic and mystical creatures, yet the drums made me feel like I´m in a dark, lonely and modern industrial world. In the end the synth chords took me to a new place again. The ending made me feel like all these worlds somehow collapsed and disappeared all togheter as a one intertwined system. The “this-cabel-is-broken”/“this-data-is-corrupted”-type glitchy noises made this just perfect! A very interesting experience, listened to it many times! Good job!

Garfferen - Mingling Mutants
Good production, everything sounds balanced. When the drums came in I instaltly thought “that is a very nice sounding kick drum”. The intro with the foleyish ambience was cool! The synths sound very analog. Nice track, well done!

Uilo ( W lo W ) - Mu
I don´t know if something got messed up but the soundquality on this one is garbage (sounds like there could be a high-resonance lowpass filter set pretty low on the master? Or a flanger of somesort? IDK… There is another pretty similar track on the artists soundcloud called 2019 Mutant break 12. That one was ok, had some interesting sounds.

ghismart - RST
A nice dnb tune. Nice gritty bass sound in the beginning. I feel drum´n´bass is all about heavy bass desing, so I think this could have used some additional subs and a bit more modulated sounddesing. I felt the mix was a bit thin for the genre. Maybe it´s because it´s in C, not the easiest key to make your subs to have weight. Of course this is all just personal preference and my associations with dnb, so take it with salt!
Other than that, some of lead melodies felt very anthem-like at certain moments, which I think was pretty cool.

Charly Blackbone / Vivace / BotB - The Flame Of Thunder
Now that´s intense! Hell yeah! Gritty basses, fast drums, 180bpm. I don´t know what to say. The breaks were good, the bass is good, the leads were fitting - the whole thing is very good. The change from the intro to the fast breakbeat stuff is supergood, caught me offguard! Well done, good job!

Seal Meat - We Might Be Under The Effects Of Ionizing Radiation But Let’s Play Video Games>
Crazy stuff - I love it! The sax/horn/whatever it is, is just crazy. The bass riff is amazing, the guitar riff is amazing, the drums are INTENSE. Wild, creative, intense. I like it very much!

Lilith 93 - Artificial Intelligence
Got some serious terminator vibes from this one. Those long paddy synths playing the melody, the text-to-speech stuff and the somewhat omnious overall feeling I guess. I enjoyed the small little glitchy sounds coming and going every once in a while. The synth at around 3 min is a really cool sound. Well done!

e4r - Bohm’s Trajectory
Nice contrast between the heavy guitars and the chiptuney synths. Maybe a bit demoish sound quality overall, could certainly use some mixing. The length of the track felt a bit too long for me, became a bit repetitive when compositianlly there was nothing new happening. Overall a nice nintendocoreish track with pretty authentic sounding chiptune timbres.

elias - Mutant Candy
Positive and bright, yet somehow twisted in a subtle way. The marimba was definitely a nice touch! Quirky composition. I got a bit of a weird twisted carnival ambience in an unreleased N64 or PS1 game feeling. Was an enjoyable and mentally stimulating experience, well done!

P L O M - CZ 200 V9 (MUTANT BREAKS #12)
Glitchy, choppy, stuttery. Seemingly unrelated pieces of audio come and go in a very jerky way. Seems like I´m listening to somebody turning a tune knob on an alienradio that has some sort of antistatic circuit to cancel the static between the channels. Every once in a while a more or less coherent beat establishes itself, just to be switched away the next moment. Towards the end the listener settles on a weird station playing fast glitchy music, but figures very soon that listening to a radio isn´t what one is wants to do right now.

trotch - Woody Harrelson Remix
I don´t know what to say about his one. A decent, fast dnb-ish tune. Dark and omnious harmonically. Dark synth leads with timbres that could be used in some anthems. My favourite part was the towards the end with the sampled speech and pads playing organ like stuff. Good tune!

this beat - Somehow Someway
Now that´s quite a way to start a track! The distorted bass and the streched sample work beautiful. And that bass sound is just fantastic in its own right! The sort of half-time feel in the beginning was super cool and made the overall structure feel thought out. Good drum programming and I really enjoyed the pads around 3 min. Well done!

Acodreon - Mutants Brews Shit In The Swamps
Holy cow! Yeah, they mutants certainly be brewing sum shit in the swamps! Gorgeous stuff! Enoyjed the liquid sounds very much. I think the speech worked well with the music: “and to get it going faster”…hell yeah! Enjoyed this one very much good job!

Frank S - Heavy Weight Sound (Mutant Breaks #12 Tasty Edit)
Yeah, that definitely is some heavy weight bass sounds! Well put together dnb track. The mix sounds spot on. I particularly enjoyed the switch into the silly mode towards the end - very nice touch! Overall an amazing tune!

Redman - Render Up Little Man
Wow, I mean, wow. This is insane! The drum programming is INTENSE and I absolutely love the synths that come in and pair with the crazy drums. Very stimulating! Definitely gonna steals some ideas from this one! Brilliant stuff, you´re a freaking jedi!

The Bellows - Mutant Breaks 12
The bass starting the track is AMAZING, thats some serious bassdesing right there! It is quite a long tune with several ideas, and couple of times I felt it became a bit repetitive before moving to the next idea. At 6 min when the synth came in, it felt a bit like a totally different track just started. So structurally this just didn´t work for me. Other than that an overall decent, well put together track. Nice work!

FX Send - Freeman’s Drum Machine
If Gordon does have some sort of an extradimensional alien drum machine, it probably sounds something just like this! Nice squelchy 303 stuff in the background, really enjoyed that. Enjoyable drums sounds too. Overall this felt like a live jam with some knob-twisting being in the central focus here. Extremely good work! Really enjoyed this!

AAmadeus - Mutating Friends Shittune
Nice little chiptune. Many blips and blops I enjoyed. Composition is actually pretty brilliant: even though its just more or less the same theme modulated a half step up two times, it does really fill the whole track without feeling overly repetitive. And those modululaions are crafted with some very nice chords! I can definitely imagine this in a indie game modulating up in halfsteps endlessly with some smart gradual octave changes. Nice one!

Maya Azem - Foreign Affairs
I really like this one! Very nice synth sounds! The feeling this conveys is just amazing! So bright, so hopeful, so light. Happy and optimistic. I really dig the march-like snare too! I don´t know what else to say! An absolutely amazing tune, great job!

lusd - MBV12 - Mutating Friends
Some jungle type stuff with some pretty prominent speech synthesis sounds in there. The mix feels very narrow, almost like mono for most parts. And its kind of muffled too. There is a low rumble present throughout almost the whole track and it seems to mask everything else. The theme for MB12 was definitely present there, so good job with that.

BlueFountain - RN2019SUMB12
This one feels very fragmented. It´s like theres separate ideas that seem to be connected only through being put in the same project. I mean you could definitely make this as an idea work, but this time for me it just didn´t. There was couple of nice filter sweeps somewhere in there though - and I did like a couple of the tempo change thingys.

mios - Joy Div Soc
Nice sound choices, very chiptuney! Has a somewhat dnb drive to it. The chord choices are also very cool! And that synth solo melody thingy does a couple of pretty damn cool things in there too! This could definitely be an ending credit tune to an anime series - great job!

I listened over the weekend while driving on a road trip with my brother. There were so many good tracks, I learned from everybody and now have a lot of xrns files to dig through

My top three are as follows (in no particular order) -

*Clouds Gone - Fritzens Friends
*Exutoire - Emwan
*mios - Joy Div Soc

3 honorable mentions

*SimulatedZen - Relational Darwinian Mechanics
*Charly Blackbone/Vivace/BotB - The Flame of Thunder
*this beat - Somehow Someway

daemonarmada - GT94mk3MB12 - I like the vibe of this track, feels like the soundtrack of taking a long journey through the desert to find something mysterious. I like the filter on the guitar(?) that makes it wail like it does.

T3AC VFX - Dperc2 Full10m - Aciddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd yos. I can picture 2 dimly lit figures waltzing in a dark room to this, and I mean that as a compliment.

Panos Kostagiannis - Friends By Panos K - The first minute reminds me of some tapes I used to have of radio shows I recorded on weekend nights off from school. That is specific I know, but it brought back some fond memories!

EatMe - Fulltime Lover - This is a fun jazz loungey track. Would have loved to have a fill or two, but still definitely a toe tapper!

HeartBeatHero - Let’s be friends - played this track and immediately I had sunglasses on. I don’t know where they came from, they just appeared. Next thing I knew I was driving a red Ferrari in 1980’s Miami at night with a swimsuit model in the passenger seat.

Clouds Gone- Fritzens Friends - Awww yiss my friend. Now this is a fun track. One of my favorites of the bunch. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but still rocks. It’s a catchy friendly track and I think that’s what it’s all about. I like the subtle pads in the background and love the progression from 1:09 to 1:54!

Rægæ System - Mutating Frends v02 - Solid Lofi jungle track!

Type-A - Amigos Mutantes - Wonderful track that makes me think of the soundtrack to a futuristic city at night. That synth hit me in the gut.

trusti - take control (my mutant friend) - Classic techno track. Nice groove.

Stailer - Best Friend Ever - Wow man I’m very sorry about your dog. I can feel your emotion through your guitar work. Very nice arp as well.

Exutoire - Emwan - I liked the story this told in my mind. Beautiful textures. For me, the opening is a giant mutant stomping his way across a vast wasteland of forgotten robotic parts. The sun is rising over the horizon yet it’s obscured by clouds. A sound of a small robot starting to function and observe the world around it. Now the mutant and robot are traveling together as friends. The clouds are starting to break, beams of light start to break through. (Love the pads around the 4 minute mark). A small glimmer of hope. Grey clouds of industrial smoke obscure the sky above.

Garfferen - Mingling Mutants - Starts off quiet, but then that bass hits and you just know something sinister is about to happen. It’s like being in a crowded mall being slowly followed by spies.

Uilo ( W lo W ) - Mu - I like it. It sounds like the metamorphosis and deconstruction of something. Like a growing blob that’s taking shapes and forms before being coated in liquid nitrogen and broken into a thousand pieces. So I think it is the audio version of the T- 1000 (from the Terminator 2 movie). Nice use of timestretching(?)!

ghismart - RST - Nice lead melody and dnb beats. I’m a big fan of distortion and filters. This was a nice track to drive to! Renoise sound tracker tracktracktrackckckckckc

Charly Blackbone/Vivace/BotB - The Flame of Thunder - Choon! This track gets me pumped. Love the drum work! At least top five for me if not top three.

Seal Meat - We Might Be Under… - Short and sweet! Put on repeat!

Make a Wish - Pixel Friends - Amazing that you did this with two hand drawn waves! That part from 1:20-1:25 right before the main theme is really catchy. Fun track!

Lilith 93 - Artificial Intelligence - Love the beat repeats and that synth texture!

e4r - Bohm’s Trajectory - Interesting mix of instruments and electronics. I like the harmonics you put on some of the notes on the guitar track. Nice mix too imo.

elias - Mutant Candy - I enjoyed the joyful feel of this track. It was like being in a magical video game world, I was partying with all these kinds of happy creatures and woke up with a sugar hangover! I don’t normally listen to music that sound like this so I’m glad for unique tracks like this one.

P L O M - CZ 200 V9 - I heard the Friends theme song and knew I was in for a ride. This is sample heaven. Love how the track has that stop and go feeling until all the pieces start moving side by side in the same direction. Seemed that as soon as the track became aware of it’s own existence it ceased, and that was cool.

trotch - Woody Harrelson Remix - Love the rolling drums. On a side note - when this track came up on my road trip playlist, my brother remarked that it made him think of a video game level of little bongo cats and one giant boss bongo cat.

this beat - Somehow Someway - Great sample selection, nice mix, fantastic drum work and that opening is fire! Perfect balance between the resonating pads and the distortion. That bass! This is near the top for me for sure.

Acodreon - Mutant Brews…- Relentless! This starts as a spark and quickly heats up until it’s an unstoppable fireball shooting through the sky incinerating everything in it’s way until it burns out. Wow!

Frank S - Heavy Weight Sound - Loved the bass work and how the song takes it even further up a notch with the four on the floor kick in the second part. This was great fun to drive to.

Redman - Render Up Little Man - This track made my face melt off. Then I blacked out and woke up 3 days later in an open field with no recollection of what happened. Superior drum programming!

The Bellows - Mutant Breaks 12 - I like the air of quietness that permeates this track. Subtle and not overpowering. The bass says a lot without saying too much and is complimented by the contrast of the bells. Beautiful.

FX Send - Freeman’s Drum Machine - That very soft pad in the background draws me in. I like the acid sound with the odd time signature. A great track for night driving through the city.

SimulatedZen - Relational Darwinian Mechanics - Oh wow, this started as a murmur and came to life quickly - love how the soft piano comes to the surface so sweetly at the beginning. I am impressed with the bass work here and where all the sounds are (spatially) in relation to each other. I can’t help but think of drops of liquid mercury breaking apart and coming together. This piece paints a beautiful picture.

AAmadeus - Mutating Friends Shittune - Solid tune!

Maya Azem - Foreign Affairs - Nice! I love the melody and simple arrangement. I think the reverb makes for a wonderful atmosphere. I don’t know why exactly, but this piece makes me think of just sitting on a rooftop somewhere in the city at the end of the day watching cars and people go by.

sunnk - augury swore the skull of essence - A great track to pull up next to someone at a stop light with full bass. The soundscape makes my jaw drop. Brilliant.

lusd - MBV12 - Headbanging to this track with headphones on while typing this. My only complaint here is that it’s not loud enough!

BlueFountain - RN2019SUMB12 - Very experimental but that’s not a bad thing. Feels like an improv track having fun jamming out. There’s a little bit of everything here.

mios - Joy Div Soc - This is a great track to end the list with! I’m not a huge chiptune fan but this hit me in the feels unexpectedly. Love the melodies! This could be the song for the closing credits of the Mutant Breaks 12 movie.

Wow, this is a great collection of music! It was really hard to narrow it down to three… If you ask me tomorrow it might be a different set.

In no particular order -

  1. @lilith - Artificial Intelligence.
I really dug what you did with the labello break here! That’s not a break you hear a lot so I thought it was cool you used it. The time feel kinda reminded me of this old school electronic group called L.F.O. You ever heard of them? Their first album called L.F.O. is something I think you might like  I also liked the dubby delays going on. Curious what delay you used? Sounds good, doesn’t get in the way like a lot of tape delays often do.
  2. @fxsend - Freeman’s Drum Machine
This one was way cool! The synth work was great with the drum sounds. Did you use hardware here?? The 303 lines sound great. I’m trying to get better at sequencing synths. . . Sounds like you’re automating the 303 with the sequencer? Very cool.
  3. @trusti take control (my mutant friend)
This one was sick. Got real late 80’s Chicago vibes (i.e. Fast Eddie). Curious how you’re getting mix to pump like it is. Sounds great. Like the mix is breathing with the drums. I have ways of doing this, some of which are a total pain in the ass haha. Curious how you’re making it happen, sounds really nice!

Thanks, if you allow it, it is not realy nitrogen, maybe mutogen, but I’m not chemist.
My track is bad, quickly done for the living forum of mutantbreaks.
I’ll go back to sckool to inhale the rhytme of music and to modulate delicate sounds to find new issues.
My mind is elsewhere, but I like what’s done here.

My turn, last minute as always!

First I have to thank everyone for their feedback, your kind words really went to my heart and will be of great help to me. It’s that special time of the year again, and I love the spirit of this “competition”.

If I had to choose a few buzzwords to wrap this year’s brew of music, it would be:

Melodies. Chiptune. Textures. Renewed and unique, personal take on traditional genres such as drum’n’bass and breakcore. Oh, and really weird stuff!

Last year, although I did not vote for “Sunnk - Heat Death”, it turned out it was the song I found myself humming the most ( duh…duh…duh, duh, duh, dududududududu) during the following weeks.

So this year I have decided to use immediacy as a main criteria for voting, not the beauty of an .xrns file, nor me WANTING to like it, nor technical prowess.

My three choices in no particular order:

Type A - Amigos Mutantes
This feels very contemporary and yet has its own unique sound. Sleek but not tame, a song of its time.

Make a Wish - Pixel Friends
Fantastic tune. The only worrying thing is that when I have Alzheimer’s, I’ll still remember it.

trusti - Take control (my mutant friend)
Hypnotic, straightforward, great sense of timing and subtle emotions.

There, I’m posting this now, but as it’s only 3 of my favourite 15 songs, I hope I find the time to write more reviews. Heartbreaking process, this.

I had to google what the Labello Break is  . From LFO I basically only knew LFO. I listened to some albums today and they really made some great tracks. Thanks for the hint.

This one is awesome for example

The delay is the Renoise Multidelay, which I use all the time.

Thank you for your vote and kind words  I used a Korg MS 20 mini for the main lead sequenced with MIDI, and a Cyclone Bass Bot for the 303 lead with a few programmed patterns that I recorded live over it

Firstly I would like to thank you all for this competition!
So many good productions and after listening them few times it is so hard to choose 3 I liked the most…
But I have to choose only 3 so here we go:
*24 this beat - Somehow Someway - very powerfull, reminds me of The Prodigy from their dirtiest times. Very well done, whole mix. Sounds top notch!
*33 sunnk - augury swore the skull of essence - from the very first second song attacks listener with pleasing sound. Also powerfull, a little bit dirty with beautifully composed percussion and that pitch swing! Love that compressed and glitchy highs!
*30 SimulatedZen - Relational Darwinian Mechanics - omg THAT SOUND! Title is very adequate. Percussion is amazing, mix, and overall climate. I have to study your xrns more closly
And I have to mention that I liked a lot this tunes and other day this could be my top 3 or maybe some other tunes…:
01 daemonarmada - GT94mk3MB12 - reminds me one record of Raime’s. Very nice overall sound, everything is superb, but I wish it was longer…
12 Exutoire - Emwan - this one is pretty hell of a trip. Sound selection is very nice, astonishing composition I enjoyed your production a lot!
27 Redman - Render Up Little Man - OMG let’s go dance. This is instant leg mover. Mix some nice breaks, glitch them up in a nice manner and here you go PARTY BANGER ALERT !

  2. HeartBeatHero - Lets be friends (Very good, retro dense, soft and also striking, fully electro sound.)

  3. Make A Wish - Pixel Friends (Very nice music, nice chip sound. Very pleasant, friendly and at the same time a bit melancholic - and I have a slightly sad impression of something nice that will end soon.
