The hardest part (for me) is to not only think outside of 4/4, but to avoid making progressive-rock patterns in odd-time. In fact, I avoid traditional patterns entirely. No ‘beats’ either. I compose in patterns with counts based on fives, with an LPB setting of 5. That allows for exaggerated slop that meanders. Finally, I refuse to use pre-made samples, opting to synthesize my own. Text-to-speech and text-to-singing is also open-source voices only.
