I think I tried aleready having 64 steps and it caused some problems; e.g. the window gets to wide so that you have not all steps on the screen, and also other internal calculations fail so that it will be a lot of work to make it usable.
Anyway I will have a look at it again.

So this area needs a scrollbar and to be resizeable, this really must be a
bit more complex then i guess.

Both is not possible with current Renoise Lua API unfortunately.
