OK… Now have an updated archive of AXS with all song starters, utilities, tut GIFs, extras galore… The new additions are the old DOS version (2.03) as it appears there’s a need for it, also SpaceToad is included which I use as an interface for a MIDI keyboard in this way you can channel MIDI into any of the 7 synth instances or the sampler with correct preset used… I think that’s it, no I also included the AXS format songs for AXS Jazzmonger & Pulp Friction for study or spectacle…
If one is curious AXS which was originally a commercial DOS product was ported to windows in 2001 then given out free…
To those who have visited the thread over at warmplace mucho thx as believe it or not the thread has crested 949,000 views in 2.5 years… Lunacy really…
Not happening… There’s no source out only the free binary but it runs on pretty much any windows machine, I have it running on XP which I mostly use also windows 10 so one could grab up an old 10 dollar laptop with windows whatever & be in business…
AXS not for everybody unless you got retro fever it spits out a uniform stereo file when rendering as there is no panning in AXS, the only thing that gets any panning is delay send…
Butt!… Since AXS has ‘smart patterns’ (Which Arguru had incorporated into NoiseTrekker2 & still exist in current Protrekkr) one CAN mute all tracks but one then export, then mute all but a different one then export, ETC till all tracks are exported then bring into a multi-track to combine THEN you can pan all over the place or even add FX… Haven’t tried it yet I guess too much being a retro purist…
BUTT!… AXS is crash-free no matter what & only a 352 kb EXE with total directory size of way less than 500 kb yet I have saved song files over 200 MB no problem… Will accept any 16 or 24 mono or stereo sample any size… Will a 32bitter crash it? NO, AXS simply won’t load it…. Amazing piece of code that most nowadays would say it’s impossible to code such features in a single EXE that small…
The up to 7 instances of the Synth still sound good… Here in my first tune done in AXS I used just 4 & no more that 12 tracks which includes 4 just for chords-
Well, If someone had done it they haven’t yet told me but it would be worth a try… It’s a pretty straightforward directX program… The issue you might run across is that when rendering out your song AXS places it on the root of your ‘C’ drive so you must have a ‘C’ drive or partition for it to render to the only other option is to record the output via VAC or other…
In the archive I have up I have a short video on the render process just to show what goes on>>>
aww. tried to bottle it up for Apple Silicon and got this.
###BOTTLING### Enabling CoreAudio, Colors, Antialiasing and flat menus... /Applications/WineBottler.app/Contents/Frameworks/WBottler.framework/Resources/bottler.sh: line 142: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin/wine: Bad CPU type in executable ### LOG ### Command '/Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin/wine regedit /tmp/reg.reg' returned status 126.
It’s been a while since I actually used Kegworks Winery or Wineskin to make AXS30 runon Macos Ventura here. I can not really recreate what i did back then. - I know I did it with Kegworks Winery or Wineskin? - Seems since then back last year or so, Kegworks Winery has another successor or isn’t available anymore? - Can’t really find it on GitHub etc. - I used homebrew back then install it. - But it’s running fine and stable - Thanks @Iconoklast for sharing
Win some lose some hopefully most get it running well… A few things to consider on your way to financial freedom with AXS (it is FREE)…
If you add samples as you compose no problem but I’m the kind that likes to ‘engineer’ most of what I’m going to use at the start… Well if you don’t use a sample anywhere in an AXS song then AXS will delete said sample when saving a song so I use pattern 000 to play every sample I have imported then I mute the pattern & start song on pattern 001 which makes more sense anyway….
In the archive I have included a chart for the sampler pitch knob so you can see what increments it must be changed to pitch-up-dn a sample for next slot… Personally I don’t use this method anymore & just import a fresh sample for every semitone for best quality since it will save very large song file no problem…
It was designed for drum samples the using Synth instances for everything else so sampler does not support loopers best to use non-loopers for pitched instruments…. AXS has ‘note velocity filter modulation’ in the sampler but some of the 4 LED options will cancel each other out so be aware…
The tracker can go to 255 BPM so you can double the speed for better resolution of commands if your original BPM intent is 127 BPM or less… I didn’t need that for Pulp Friction but did use this doubling method for AXS Jazzmonger because fast note transitions were needed in some cases…-
I think… No wait, look into the MIDI Keyboard-to-SpaceToad-to-Virtual MIDI Port-to AXS if you wish to ‘properly’ use a MIDI Keyboard with AXS… The app is included & works well in that manner but the chart reflects my particular synth presets (also included)…
If the audio sounds nasty make sure there are no other DX apps using driver or change the driver in AXS setup to something else…
Go FORTH!…If you need help I am always available via telepathic means>>>
It works fine in Wine for me on Intel macOS. The only thing broken is the tooltips I think.
I use Wine from Homebrew, you can just right click the exe and “open with”. I mean, maybe Wine doesn’t work with Rosetta, I don’t know. But that might be worth a try.
@Iconoklast Thanks for sharing this, it’s a really neat program!
