Many times I bring Loooooong field recordings into renoise, zoom in close, play the whole thing while selecting desirable sections and ctrl+shift+C to build xrnis. Problem I’m noticing on both 32x and 64x linux builds of beta 6 is that when the playhead reaches the far right of the screen, even though it’s not the end of the actual sample, playback stops.
Also if I scroll along with the sample as it’s playing back, it will still stop playback when the playhead reaches the point that was originally at the far right of the view before scrolling, after starting playback.
I do not want playback to stop unless I tell it to stop or it actually reaches the end of the sample as many times i multitask and listen until a desirable sound is heard that I want to trim into a sample… and of course I want to be zoomed in so I can select an accurate head/tail when trimming.
selecting the whole sample before playback regardless of zoom does indeed bypass this behaviour.
this is intended. When there’s a selection it will play the selection, else the visible area. The preview in the sample editor is meant to play “parts” of the sample that you are currently editing. For everything else you can simply trigger, play the sample with the keyboard.
There are of course reasons to do or not to do this, make this optional, or add new ways to play parts of the sample in the sample editor, but let’s please discuss this in the ideas & suggestions forum…
Ok so it has always been this way. I can see how this is beneficial in some situations. Some being the operative word. Suppose you are trying to draw or cut out a small noise, or smooth out a click while zoomed way in. You want to see the “part” you’re editing in fine detail but you want to play more than just the .5 millisecond window you’re zoomed into.
I have trouble with “sample editor is meant to play parts of the sample”. I would like it to play the entire sample, regardless of my zoom level. I’m trying to think of any other wav editor that works like how the sample editor in renoise does and maybe that’s why I got thrown off thinking it was something new.
I would appreciate either one of the following additional options in order of desire:
-at the very least allow me to zoom out or scroll to the right before the playhead reaches that point and have playback continue until it hits the new current end of the screen, not where the end of the “part” was when you initiated playback.
-an option to let playback continue even if the playhead scrolls off screen.
-an option to scroll view with the playhead, either along with the playhead or by increments of your current zoom level’s “duration”.
If you’d like me to go at length to justify scenarios where I would find this beneficial to address I can for you. Just let me know if my suggestion isn’t clear. It’s probably subjective but I see any of these above suggestions more desirable than forcing the current behaviour on users, at least it would be nice to have the option to control how playback behaves in the sample editor.
Thanks Taktik for your willingness to discuss this. You’ve got many users asking for many different things and I’m sure its a lot to grapple with, especially during a beta cycle
