Im using Renoise for the first time (in fact first time messing with any DAW) so perhaps this is an easy fix.
I’m making basic melodies with the default Duotone.xrni synth instrument and while notes between C-4 and C-5 all sound the same, the next note down from there (B-3?) sounds drastically different for some reason. Is there some way to fix this or a workaround? I tried transposing the instrument down an octave and then playing up an octave but that seems to sound wrong too.
I think this is by design of the instrument maker. Look at the amount of different samples which all have slightly different timbres and how they are divided across the keyboard in the keyzones tab of the instrument editor;
Oh wicked, Thanks for showing me this. I assume this is something I could get into and edit, and I bet shifting those segments down would let me get around the issue without messing up the tone too much. Still strange that its laid out this way.
messing up the tone is subjective assuming we’re talking about other samples playing on different parts of the keyboard. Sometimes playing sounds at higher octaves can also introduce aliasing artefacts, in these cases you can optionally turn on anti aliassing;
