One Shot samples and "single-note" instruments

Hello all!

First of all, I wanted to say hello! I just recently started to learn renoise and have a quick question. Are there any reliable archives of “one-shot” samples and “single-note” instruments? I mean, i do not intend to use pre-made samples/sequences of notes, I always compose music from scratch, note by note. What i mean by “single note” is, are there any instruments that produce a single sound instead of a chord or a sequence of sounds (as in, for example, in some of the built-in instruments in renoise). I am mostly looking for:

  • good quality drum sets, both “real” and electronic

  • studio quality bass guitar sounds

  • Overdriven guitars (no chords!)

  • strings like violin, cello etc, but they must be “single note”

  • ensembles and choirs (again, preferably no chords, just single notes)

  • lead pads, mostly for “futuristic” music like those form Unreal Tournament game soundtrack

Also, some more pre-made effect chais would be helpful. Before Renoise i was using Guitar Pro 6 which was way easier to use, but also had very few sound options… sometimes in Renoise i feel a bit lost and I could use some help, maybye from othe people who make music similar to UT soundtrack?

Besides, my main concern about renoise is - is there any good (free) instrument for imitating overdriven guitar? The only upside which came with Guitar Pro’s limitations is… well, the fact that it’s designed to reproduce guitar sounds. I mean, the realistic sound engine from Guitar Pro is so good with guitars that you could easily confuse it’s artificial guitar sounds with a real-life one. Is there an instrument for Renoise which does that?

Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Hi sigmund1410,

for start recommend a few high quality general midi soundfonts from the Internet
for example:
CrisisGeneralMidi3.01.sf2 689MB
SGM-V2.01.sf2 237MB
SGM-180 v1.5.sf2 242MB
Arachno SoundFont 155MB
FluidR3 GM.SF2 148MB

unfortunately, renoise is slightly inaccurate when importing *.sf (Looppoints)
with Bass Midi VSTI you can easily compare and improve
https://forum.renoise.com/t/recommended-freeware-vst-plugins/22645

don’t know a good guitar simulation(s) (like guitar pro but not the sound)
recommend a cheap used no name fender/gibson clone e-guitar from ebay for 50 eu and a bit of exercise

TheBellows shows here impressively what is possible with renoise and effects

His other publications here, what he does with effects is also very instructive

Its hard to find good stuff…most sample presets seem to be geared to the locked preset business like kontakt & co… U will maybe have to track libraries with raw sample formats, then build your own renoise instruments. Maybe some formats could be converted, sf2 sfz mostly works, other formats might be more tricky to convert and fix up afterwards, so you can use in renoise.

Also I find, when using samples, it can make a big difference in how natural the music will sound, when you use multiple versions of intonations or even the same note…getting rid of the cheapness “every note sounds like the same sample” effect…

To do so, I chase for instrument solo parts or solo stems, or phrase samples…or multisample packs. instrument solo parts can be hand sliced/cut into single note samples, then converted to instruments…lots of work, but I find this yields the best instruments for renoise… Ofc when something is to take place in the background, it makes little difference.

Also look into the download section in the forums. There are 2 already converted to .xrni orchestra packs with lots of instrument, “vsco” and “sonatina”. You will like them I guess. I think I remember a user has put some work into supplying some rock/metal guitar patches. But if I may give u a tip, for complex/solo you are best of to use clean guitar samples and distort with effects yourself, rather than using driven guitar samples. Else consonant notes will not sound like thru the same amp, but like 2 tracks mixed together.

Yes, the VSCO instrument pack is quite good

And this is what a search for “guitar” on Renoise downloads reveal

Quite a lot, actually. Of course, not everything is great but I’ll let you be the judge of that…

Thanks for all replies  I have also tried some VST plugins which are also great! About sonatina and vsco: thanks, that was essentially what i was looking for  About guitars: i figured I can always render tracks made in GP into .wav and then import them into Renoise as samples.

As for .sf2 files: I have tried theCrisisGeneralMidi3.01.sf2 but there seems to be some problems with it. First of all, its extremely quiet! Also the sound itself is abit clunky and “delayed”. Is this a common problem with sf2 files?

at first sry, i wrote trash:

:smashed: … because renoise can read * .sfz not *.sf
need a another converter, for example polyphone (sf to sfz)

CrisisGeneralMidi3.01.sf2 with bass midi vsti run without problems here (Windows 7, M-Audio 2496, ASIO)

I can always render tracks made in GP into .wav and then import them into Renoise as samples.

if not already known look in:

C - Program Files - Guitar Pro 6 - Data - Soundbanks - Samples

sorry yes I meant sfz, not sf2. my mistake.

not all instrumnets will be loaded correctly though.

Holy Cow… I have totally forgotten about that :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks.

Thx, I will try it with this plugin, I was initially testing it with some other plugin.

Is there any way to access these VSCO instrument downloads now that the forum has migrated to Discourse?

You might find the VSCO instrument at the bottom of the list in the migrated downloads link: https://files.renoise.com/forum/downloads/Instruments/

The downloads from the previous forum are: https://files.renoise.com/forum/downloads/
