Open More Than One Song At Once (again)

hi there, i’m a registered user with 3 renoise suggestions, one large (and no doubt problematic) and two small (and seemingly relatively simple). i’ll post each suggestion in a separate message so that the smaller ones, which i also think are important improvements, don’t get “lost” if, as i expect, discussion of this bigger, less likely improvement dominates.

i’ve seen the suggestion of being able to open more than one song in one instance of rensoise stomped down as being impractical and of marginal use. but, i for one think it would be very useful, and if one runs up against system limits, so be it.

it would be very handy to be able to copy and paste patterns between songs in renoise, for which you need to have more than one song open at once, at least temporarily.

the expedient of “run more than one copy of renoise at once” is inelegant, especially on mac osx where the only way to do it is to have two entire separate copies of the renoise application around to do this (or three copies for 3 songs at once etc…), but also in general it is more of a drain on system resources than even two songs in one instance is held up to be.

in lieu (or addition) to more than one song loaded at once, the ability to “open insert” or “open append” a song from disk into the currently open song would be useful in itself, simpler to implement, and would have uses of its own in terms of getting patterns from one song easily into another without having to have more than one renoise instance running.

ok,
thats suggestion 1 (and one and a half) ;)

Not sure if you already tried this, but: for copy+paste between two instances with limited resources - open the song, delete all VST etc instruments, DSPs, save the song under different name. Now open second Renoise, open renamed song, open the original song in first Renoise with all instruments etc and you can copy from one R_ to other R_ easily. For transfering DSP effects save/load your DSP chain.

I am quite happy with this solution ;)

The OP apparently isn’t, hence the suggestion for an improvement ;)

yeh zdenek thnx for suggestion.

however the limitations i mentionned still apply, especially having to have multiple copies of the program to run multiple instances under osx. in fact under osx, when i run each “named copy” of renoise it also asks to install rewire again for each copy of renoise… a pita.
