Ophidian phrases: tips?

Hi there,

I was looking at this on 909 days: https://youtu.be/CJnCLsXBIaY?si=Nkl5v3HZyUhxddN4

I really like the phrase he made start from 8:52 to 9:02.

Some repeater-plugin? Or just fancy midi in Renoise?
How would you make it?

Thanks for any tips, I’m new on this daw-concept

Awesome video; sounds good!
I’m going to have to watch the full video for more clues later, thanks for sharing!

****Notice the 909 kick and in the track next to it ‘High Kick’.

The High Kick sample likely has some Retrigger commands (Rxy) for some of the faster beats, perhaps more important here is to set up your editing space with a higher LPB so you have more resolution between
beats, LPB 8 or 16 will provide much more space between ‘beats’ than the default 4.

****Notice the pure analog tone lead voice.

Here we have what looks like a fast transition from Saw to Sine (~20ms).

The sound starts off with a bit more harshness during the short attack, then it enters a loop where
it is playing a short sine wave, which sounds best in the upper registers, ideal for lead.

The Lead itself is highly enhanced with what sounds to me like some delay and reverb it seems,
but other than that it is playing a few simple notes, mostly repeting rhythmically.

As one point the looping sine seems to slide down an octave, this is where Dxx command can help.

****Notice the Bass
This is a really nice bass, seems to be Square-wave based with a high Pulse Width, it may be hand-drawn.

Ok, watching this now… This is likely the original sample, in case it helps:

Oh yeah, this is pure mastery.

Thanks for the feed

Well, yes, that’s interesting. But I’m more interessed on the phrase/midi/score of those 10 seconds, between 8:52 to 9:02.

Despite the samples being used (I would for the purpose use different noise, kick, pad and flash-sound layer), I’d like to recreate somethings like this, or at least have a clue on whats going on (maybe some filter applied with automation? just arp? mmmm).

Bump!!!

Any others have some suggestions about how to make this kind of pattern?

Hmm, haven’t had a ton of time to study this, but some thoughts. First one is (lol) it would be nice to see the actual patterns as it’d be easier to tell what is happening because of the various track effects vs something like note effects. Random thoughts:

  1. Take a look at the top of the screen where you can see exactly which tracks are triggered during this sequence. Then go back to the part of the video where he is showing what each track sounds like. This may help you figure out what particular effects are contributing to the sound.

  2. During this sequence, it looks like some extremely fast triggered notes are contributing to the sort of “repeating effect” you’re hearing. Also, and I’d have to sanity check the actual track effects he shows, seems like at least some of these tracks are using a combination of delays/filters that are contributing to the repeats and pitch shifts - AND depending on what instrument slot he is using, the tight timeframe of the loop is also probably contributing to the speed of the sound. But, at the very least, some extremely fast note triggers on the drums.

  3. Kind of interesting, I’m still learning, but I’m not sure I’ve ever thought about using so many tracks as sort of your effects/modulation and then routing the exact same instrument through it to get varying effects. I’ll have to test this out, but it may also be that he’s able to get this sort of very tight transition between sounds because he’s routing one instrument to varying different tracks. In that case, the sound might (might again, I need to test this out) be being cut by placing a new note on a different track. So, you jump from a sound of a laser bass directly into something that sounds like a kick hit or a synth and it’s almost automatic.

Could be way off, just some off the cuff observations. … Happy Hunting!
