It’s not crashing – there’s an option in the Audio menu called “enable overload prevention”. Untick that box. However, you’ll get lots of sound tears and things. The only wway you can get rid of this is be either getting a faster computer, getting rid of lots of vsti/effects + changing everything from cubic to linear.

You mean that there are no FX loaded into Renoise, you are not even playing back the song?
Is this probably an OSX running on Windows PCs? Looks like Renoises internal timers do not work.
Have you tried using a differnet soundcard/driver in Renoises Audio Prefs pane?
You already had this problem with older versions of Renoise, don’t you?
If all this doesn’t help, got to Renoises Prefs → Audio → uncheck “Enable automatic overload prevention”

The CPU and Threshold option is still enabled… also the rate is standing on 60% while 85% is a better load value (try 1000msecs as threshold).
If Renoise is idle at the point of issue, I think it can be safe to say that Renoise is not at fault.
I would however wonder if it would be possible to reenacting this scenario with all USB devices removed(except regular keyboard and mouse) as the USB buss tends to sap cycles from the CPU (incidentally firewire doesn’t, which is why FW HDD’s are always favored in AV recording setups). I also could not help noticing you are using Truecrypt; I wonder if that is causing the slowdown, there must be a considerable CPU hit as the encryption algorithms kick in.
Another culprit for these spikes are copy protection drivers. anything like pace or flex on your system?
magiel: again, this is not a crash: it is a mechanism which avoids that the CPU load gets too high, which can lead to system block and instability.
your problem seems to be that this mechanism does not work well because the CPU meter does not report the load correctly. did you try what taktik suggested? if it is just a matter of erroneous CPU load metering, Renoise should run just fine even if CPU load is reported to be near 100%.
