Playing old tunes with Renoise

Dear developers,

I had a go with Renoise the demo version a couple of times, I must say it is very good and well designed player, a true homage to the trackers from the Amiga and the PC demoscene era from the good old days  So I must say it is almost an instant buy for me, but what holds me back currently is that the tunes from these good times, don’t play exactly the same as with FastTracker or any old trackers. I probably would reckon there are other bugs or features that you probably would look into first rather in fixing this, but my question is; is this something that is done on purpose or will this be patched out eventually?

Best regards!

Renoise is not – and has never intended/pretended to be – a fully accurate oldschool player.

It can obviously import some old formats at a basic level, to then allow you to re-work the songs, instruments, etc.

But it was never designed to be a 100% perfect player for XM, S3M, IT, etc.

Renoise is its own thing, so take advantage of that.

If you just wanna play and/or edit some old tunes with more accuracy, then maybe look at something like XMplay or MilkyTracker – or even using something like DosBox to run the old trackers directly.

If you wanna do some new modern shit with a classic tracker vibe, then use Renoise

Just don’t expect Renoise to be a perfect environment for playing old tunes – it will never be that, plain and simple.

Though you can make Renoise accurately replay also v1 mods and also specific xms. You then need to convert those songs using the correct converter tool first into a newer format version, or ft->xm or so. There are many threads about it here, I forgot the details.
