Poll: Have You Used A Tracker Before Renoise?

Oh this brings back memories.

I started on some obscure meta-tracker on the C-64, I can’t even recall its name, then quickly moved on to Soundtracker, NoiseTracker, Protracker, created a parallel port sampler and started cranking out sample floppies. From there, I tried Octamed but wasn’t really that impressed and had a long hiatus before I went onto getting a PC and trying FastTracker, MadTracker and Buzz 2, and now finally Renoise.

it is an awesome reassurance coming from you. skaven, purple motion, it-alien. maybe not same crew but same breath. wow. hahaha.

MODEdit 2.0 -> Multitracker/MTM(?) -> Composer669 -> FastTracker 2 -> MOD Plug Tracker -> Renoise (though I’ve barely used it, as I’d moved to Cakewalk between FT2 & MPT). I have several DAW packages these days but still enjoy the concepts of trackers (though not the sound quality; samples always sound somewhat less vital to me in trackers).

soundtracker.protracker.fasttracker1.fasttracker2.screamtracker3.impulsetracker2.AXS.buzztracker.modplugtracker.ztracker.revisit.renoise.

FT2 -> FL3 -> Renoise +Reaper.

I started with MED on the Amiga500, the original 4 track version of OctaMed.

2001-2007 modplug
2007-2513 renoise

1992-2002
Octamed 4 and a Technosound Turbo Sampling 8 bit Cartridge, I used to have to tweak the DC offset with a screwdriver lol. Actually had Cubase VST, fruityloops3 and magix music maker on the family PC but it would crash all the time.

2004 Octamed sound studio and Madtracker (PC) but I was on the the Med forum and I witnessed a flame war saying how Renoise was leagues ahead and that the guy that runs Med studio should give up. I was kind of loyal to that software having used it so long but after trying Renoise there was no turning back, also used traction 2-3 before the pattern matrix came along.

Scream tracker - Impulse tracker - Modplug tracker - Renoise

Started in 2008 with LSDJ for the gameboy. After learning that, I tried a lot of DAWs (Ableton, Reason, Cubase, Reaper…) and Renoise was the only one that felt ‘right’. Everything else just reminded me of fake DJs building regular boring club music… Renoise still feels like home, like I’ve got my own little world and not just a tool for writing music (pretty much like playing guitar).

I used Soundtracker 2 first I think, with the occasional protracker and noisetracker.

It’s funny how loyal some amiga trackers were to their chosen tracker given that the differences weren’t exactly startling.

started on a amiga2000 -> Impulsetracker 2 -> modplugtracker & buzz -> Renoise
also played with cubase and ableton and ofcourse radio538 dancemachine :D

Renoise is the first tracker I have ever used. I’m too “young” to be a part of the old school tracker fans. Also it’s my main program to play with music since I started a month ago

Started with GMC (Game Music Creator) on the Amiga 500, then Protracker 3.15. After that i jumped on the PC with Impulse / Scream Tracker and Fasttracker II.
Then after that i used Noisetrekker 2 and 3 and thats how i ended up with Renoise.

I have to admit, i just can’t get used to these horizontal based apps with pianorolls (cubase, ableton etc). I’m stuck to trackers.
I work in a music studio in Rotterdam, but each time i use Cubase there i just feel clumsy

Heya! I am old enough to might have used trackers in the C64 / Amiga era but I didn’t. Since I run Linux on my private machine I experimented with Rosegarden (piano roll oriented) but it was ressource hungry and I did not manage to produce proper sounds for a while. I discovered Renoise recently and immediately fell in love with the program. I consider it easy to use, complex enough for me to grow and learn for a couple of years and most important: cross platform perfectly done (just bought my license)!

Kudos to the devteam,
Mx

startet 97 with screamtracker -> impulstracker -> fasttracker II -> logic -> cubase 4.5 later with reason & live -> 2011 luckely my main PC crashed so i searched for fast alternatives on my 2nd “old” PC in the living room - there i got “sentimental” and searched the trackermarket and found renoise

My history of using the tracker software is:

  • Audio Sculpture (Amiga)
  • MED 3.x (Amiga)
  • DIGI Booster 1.7 / 2 Pro (Amiga)
  • Jeskola Buzz (PC)
  • Renoise (Mac)

I have used FL, Reason, Ableton… but i stick to Renoise, great soft for me!

  • 1991 : SoundSmith (Apple II GS)
  • 2001 : Cubase
  • 2008 : Renoise

My computer music creating history:

  • Dynamic Drums :drummer: (no Tracker; Amiga)
  • Aegis Sonic (no Tracker; Amiga) “very cheesy, don’t like the sound”
  • Protracker (Amiga) “wow! these awesome sounding samples!”
  • Octamed (Amiga) “Eight voices!”
  • Cubase (no Tracker) “Piano-Roll-Bar? Whats this sh…? Instant dislike!”
  • Sonar LE (no Tracker)
  • Madtracker “cool!”
  • Renoise “coooool! A professional tracker!”

It’s so funny, i used Protracker A LOT and if some1 asked me what could the Protracker of my dreams do, i would not have been able to think of anything awesome like Renoise. But i miss the beautiful level bars in the tracks ;)

Today in use:

  • Renoise (top-notch tracker-geeky DAW gear)
  • Sonar LE (can save SYSEX, drag-n-drop midi implementation, audio tracks)
  • Audiotool

I started out, like a lot of people, on Protracker on the Amiga. l still have a folder on my PC full of old mods and samples from my Amiga HD.
I think once you learn how to make music one way you can never unlearn it so it makes sense to use that skill with the advancements of renoise.
