Recording iPad or iPhone audio into Renoise using Scarlett Focusrite 2

Hey there,

So I have a bunch of apps on my iPhone and iPad that I use to produce music with on those devices, but I’d like to record them into my true love, Renoise using my Scarlett Focusrite 2i4 to the macbook and plugging the iOS devices into the interface as line-in. I’ve tried using a double ended headphone jack to a 1/4" converter thing into the right/left channels of the interface. But either way I do it, recording or monitoring the output of my iOS devices, it never sounds the way it should. Also, that way seems to suck since it’s in mono, I’d prefer stereo recordings. The basses are very vague if there at all. I’ve even tried swapping the ends for the headphone jack cable to see if that’ll help. Anyway, whats the best way to get my iOS devices involved with my Renoise workflow?

This is driving me up the wall! I’d love to be able to record myself jamming out in AniMoog or ZedSynth into Renoise then layer a bunch of drums and weird samples into the mix in the tracker.

Thanks!

You shouldn’t use a double ended headphone jack, what you need is a stereo jack to 2x mono jacks.

If it still sounds bad and you have to turn up the volume either too high or too low, then there might be some impedance problems causing it. You could try an external preamp.

Take a look at the specifications of your devices, there should be some info about input/output differences. The input impedance of your Focusrite interface should be higher than the ouput impedance of your iPhone.

Also known as a Y-Splitter, that should be what you need

Awesome! Thanks a bunch TheBellows and organic io! I’ll go pick one up soon

I’ve had this audio card previously, very nice card for cheap, the preamps there are good enough, its just ipad’s output - it’s very weak by means of loudness and not such a great quality. I’ve played several dj sets from 2 ipads/traktor combo, the volume is really low compared to cdjs, proper audio card or even built in laptop sound.

Your audiocard have two front inputs with switches, so switch them to INST and make up some gain and dont worry about the reds.

p.s. btw, there is an app for ios devices which can transfer realtime audio directly to DAW via usb, i just cant remember the name of the app, i guess it was mentioned @ CDM blog or something, try google it somehow.

Audiomux?

Curious if the iOS might later bring this functionality, too.

Anyone try AudioMux or MusicIO? I’ve seen them around iOS music app blogs but never saw any testimonies, but I’d trust you folks here the most since we all use Renoise.

Hey, thanks a lot dude! I got a y-connector and it sounds just as crisp using the y-connector to my interface as it does plugging in my iOS devices directly into the monitors via RCA. I even checked the levels using the Sunrizer VST I bought a few months ago for my computer with the same patches in Sunrizer on my iOS devices to make sure they sounded identical. Anyway, much appreciated mate! Can’t wait to start recording some amazing tunes using the best of Renoise and iOS worlds :D.

But the iPad / iPhone also can use something like 3-to-1 splitter, so you’ll get mic-in at the same time.

If you jailbroke your device, you can also remove the countries dependant volume limiting (it can output much louder without amplifying noise so much). For this you “simply” have to edit one or two plist in a system audio framework dir of the device, changing one number. Forgot how to do exactly, Google like “remove eu volume limit ipad jailbreak” will help for sure…
